It has to be live people. We need to discount that looks are everything. This is why I suggest a speed dating type scenario.... I can go on record that many of my friends partnerships were formed with an initial "I Aint sure" feeling towards their now partner, only after they had been in each others company for a while did they realise they had mutual attraction..........
I think Photo evidence is shallow.
I also know one person back in my youth who I found unattractive to start with who changed her hairstyle to one that really suited her, and my opinion changed immediately.

I recall there was some basis to "beer goggles"
the common joke is to place a guy with a T-shirt that says "drink 'til she's cute" next to a girl with a T-shirt that says "drink 'til he's intelligent" (or some other justified drunken letch bashing adjective)
the alcohol and tobacco industry might squawk at this, but how about an episode where they rate a group of models on attractiveness - featuring 4 pictures of each model - one clean, one with alcohol in hand, one with tobacco in hand, and one with both. I'm curious to see what the trend is.

I thing your proposition is worth investigating.... But.... One small change. The Alcohol issue... Compare a glass of Champers to a Pint glass half drunk in the models hand.... Is it what sort of drink they hold that makes the difference?...

It will make a difference what drink they're holding. At least to some women. And I'm willing to bet there's a difference in where you get the women for the test from, as in what "class" do they consider themselves (or would at least like to be) part of? Or, to put it another way: How snobby are they?

A lot of males would probably view a female drinking a beer or a margarita much more approachable than a female drinking cognac or a cosmopolitan. Then again, you could drill down as far as opinions of females who drink tap beer (in a glass) vs bottled beer...or even bottled beer in the bottle vs poured into a glass.

I'm not too sure about that. I think there is a difference in the perceptions of people with high class careers versus those with high class drinks, they may not necessarily be the same. You can drink beer even though you're a CEO of Fortune 500 company just as easily as the cashier at Walmart may be drinking cognac. Drinks and careers don't have to correlate.

In that case, you could even test this concept on a younger generation of participants. How many guys in High School go starry-eyed when they see the head cheerleader even though they know that they don't stand a chance in Hades?

That is along the lines of what I was thinking for that particular law of attraction. I think I'd state that "a woman's attractiveness adjusts in inverse proportion to her approachability"

Noting my own customers. I have a few women, who, being wives of Husbands who know their beers, will drink Bitter. They will take a bottle beer (just under a full pint) and decant a little at a time into a large wine glass. Some may take a half-pint nonic, or even a tumbler, but, none would be seen dead with a full pint glass. It just isnt "Done" in polite company..... That isnt snobbery at all, its just, well, Women dont drink out of pint glasses....
Current series of UK "X" factor, (Airing now) the number of contestants making it known they are attracted to Cheryl Cole. More chance explaining thermonuclear dynamics to a whelk. In a supernova. It still doesnt matter, but they have more chance anyway.
