The northern lights are insanely beautiful, even here, up north in lapland, they really are something else though. This morning on the trip to work: Olavinlinna in Savonlinna as seen from the railway bridge.

Attachment DeletedI'm kind of limited in being able to take pictures from my commute, for obvious reasons. and this is not typical weather - though just "bad" and not "terrible"

View Attachmentwhen I go through, I start to realize my photography is now more for documentation than for publication. this was the aftermath of our 2012 snowstorm Your backyard looks pretty wild, I love the photo post-snowstorm, it just has an intriguing and somewhat sinister look to it. Like when I look at it I kind of expect to see Scooby Doo and the Mystery Van roll by. I thought that (near) vertical white spot looked out of place against the snow, then I see the aftermath once the snow melted and it is still there. What is that? Almost looks like some mineral deposit, kind of like the pools at Yellowstone but more of a falls than a pool.

Olavinlinna castle picture from the other side, taken dogwalking One of my favorite things on this planet are castles, I would love to have the opportunity to visit or even see in person just one. Of course I then would want to see more but... I can't help thinking about how much labor went into building those things, and the architecture itself is most often nothing short of mesmerizing. We think a 100 year old barn is ancient here in the U.S. we got nothing on these old structures of Europe and other old world locations. You are, at least in my eyes, fortunate to live within walking distance of such a historical structure. Nice shots of the Northern Lights too.

Yes I am now officially jealous.
With that kind of water, I could run a generator......

Yes I am now officially jealous. With that kind of water, I could run a generator...... it is on the wish list. of course, the three big questions are how many KVA will it produce, (2 inch water line and about 100' of head) how much will it cost to install, and how much am I going to have to pay Uncle Sam to have the Army Corps of Engineers out to play mother-may-I to install it.

its kind of sad that some of our greatest technical marvels are being discarded because someone came up with something simpler.
