My 3 year-old daughter has been obsessed with certain Disney movies lately. SO I thought I would give some analysis of films I have seen a few times too many.

Frozen. This is a mixed bag. Some good ideas, others poorly executed. 1. Different take on the villain. In this case the ultimate villain is the boyfriend-prince. That is such a change for Disney that it is worth giving credit. The problem is that they spend the first part of the move setting Queen Elsa up as the villian, only to turn her into a tragic lost soul that by the time they reveal that Hans is really the villan, he has no development time and it doesn't have much weight to it. 2. They also kill the parents on screen, it's a wide angle shot of a ship going down in a storm, but they do explain what happens to them. so credit there to avoiding the old tropes. 3. Music. This is one of the biggest disappointments. Several songs really do nothing to further the story. I understand it's a musical and you will have sons that disrupt the pace, but a several (Frozen Heart, Fixer Upper, & In Summer) really add nothing to the story. The first just slows down the start of the movie and the last is almost a Big Lipped Alligator Moment*. On the other hand, Do You Want to Build A Snowman is very effective at showing how Elsa deals with her sister over time and sets up the relationship. The only problem is it is catchy as hell and my kids are obsessed with it. 4. Characters are just dumb across the board. The old wise rock troll misses the obvious way to help her and set her up for isolation and mental illness. THe parents encourage if isolation adding to the mental illness. Anna is clueless and ditsy. Elsa is reactionary and shortsighted. Kristoff has multiple Personality Disorder. Olaf is just flat out annoying. Really, you can't get into any of the main characters. 5. Why is there no castle staff? No administrators, governors, advisors, ambassadors, etc? This government should have crumbled a LONG time before. At a minimum, the people in the area would have revolted when they shut down all trade and isolated the kingdom which would have killed the local economy. 6. For something set in the mid 19th century, why are they still using crossbows? There are no firearms in the movie. My understanding is the original story had Elsa as a full fledged villain, but when they recorded "Let It Go", they rewrote the story with and changed her into a tragic prodigal son. Some element make more sense in that context. But overall they don't really develop anyone to the level needed. Finally, for such a unique Nordic setting, they do surprisingly little with it. Outside of the names, the fjord, and some clothing designs, this could take place in any European setting. You have a rich history and culture, and they didn't do anything to take advantage of it. I'll give it 2.5/5. * allthetropes.fandom.com/wiki/Big_Lipped_Alligator_Moment

I take Disney’s animated films for what they’re worth. Kids entertainment with enough adult material that their parents don’t get bored out of their minds when they are forced to take their kids to a theater to see them. I think you’re over analyzing.

Mrs TLW just realized disney animated features are musicals. That could be because she threw out your sound system. Hard to hear music through a 3" TV speaker.

Every year I would take her to the Disney on ice show, which was always based on one of the Disney films. I have to admit, those ice productions were always very well done.

I forget now where I saw it, but somewhere there was a joke that Disney bought out Fox, giving them ownership of MASH, which made Klinger a disney princess.

It also retro-actively makes Alita a Disney Princess, something that I'm sure will make more than a few heads asplode once that fact finally sinks in.
