First big snow storm of the season. 5 inches so far and more coming. Debating going to shovel before the sun goes down or just wait until the morning.

Yeah, we only got about an inch last night. But if we get the maximums they are predicting for the week, we’ll l have about 16 inches on the ground by the end of next weekend. But I tend to doubt that.

we're just getting rain here, but some of the rain seem to be coming down a bit more stiff than usual.

6 inches total yesterday. They are calling for another 6-8 on Tuesday. I have the feeling I will be working from home that day.

storm rolled in last night. power out around 11. this morning, it came un pretty much just long enough for me to microwave a corn dog, before dropping out, again. and they are guessing this is going to be followed by a cold snap. (it's actually warmer than average for January right now)

And speaking of cold snaps, our high temperature for next Monday is forecast to be -2° F. That’s the high. The low is predicted to be -9.
At least we are expecting 8 inches of snow Thursday. Of course, they were also predicting 5 inches for today, but it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen.

Of course, they were also predicting 5 inches for today, but it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen. that's a pretty small range of temp's. Usually, when the high is predicted to be -2 for us, the low is something like -20. We're getting our snow right now. I went into work this morning, and came home mid-afternoon to finish the day. I was perfect at predicting when the gap between the two snow events was going to be. I shoveled when I got home (about 2 hours ago) and see I'm going to have to shovel again after work. I think we'll end up with 5-8 inches total. Not bad considering this is our first real snow of the winter... normally we have a min of 8 inches on the ground.

Hard rains yesterday, winds today.
A cold front is going to hit Thursday evening into Friday morning, then another front will come in Sunday night. The front coming in Sunday night will bring temperatures below freezing, enough that my mom is actually debating with herself as to whether or not to take the risk of allowing two cats that have parked themselves on our front porch to come inside as the newest members of the menagerie.

I got about 4 inches of snow, but then it warmed up and I got an additional 1.3 inches of rain, according to my weather station. So in reality, I think the rain was closer to 2 inches, because the first rain to come through an melt the snow that had built up on the rain gauge wouldn't have reported properly. If I'm going to get that much, I would prefer rain, because that would have likely been around 2 feet of snow. I am glad I didn't have to shovel that.

They are now predicting a foot of snow on Friday. Don’t think the little two cycle Toro is going to be able to handle that. Probably time to dig the big boy out of the shed and move it into the garage.

Some of the more expensive weather stations have heated rain gauges. That way they can tell you the water content of the snowfall. Of course, it’s still difficult to convert inches of rain to inches of snow because the conversion can vary greatly depending on the weather conditions.

Literal calm before the storm right now. We're going to get a cold front tomorrow night, and this will keep the weather so cool that when moisture comes in on Sunday night it could lead to ice.

The Sunday front is looking to come in *much* earlier than expected. Instead of hitting around 7 PM local, it's going to hit around noon.
Mom and dad bought a pergola from a local big-box home improvement store, and dad is going to assemble it over the back porch then mount some window-grade plexiglass material to it to protect the concrete mix and other building supplies he has out there for his shed. We're pretty much taking for granted that at least some of the local strays will be hiding under there until the worst passes some time next week, although we don't know if any of the cats that linger on our front porch will join them. If not, then mom will have to make some decisions as two of the cats have made it clear they want to be adopted.

Now they're saying the Sunday front could come in overnight Saturday.
Everything is confused right now.
Mom has been wanting to go ahead and take the Christmas tree down anyway, so I'm going to help her tomorrow. That way if we do by some chance need to use the wood-burning stove for heat the smoke won't damage the tree or ornaments.
