IIRC, the original rivets were a stud and washer style two-piece rivet. current clothes rivets are a hollow stud with a cap.

Iron in Rivets....
As far as I can find out, they expected them to be washed at some point, Iron rusting, not good.
Copper, Mild rust proof steel, Aluminium, other metals, yes, iron, no....?....
