Thanks to how cold it's gotten at night when I'm out at work, my cell phone's battery has been nuked; it won't hold a charge anymore.
Thing is, AT&T says that my model of phone has been discontinued; I'd have to get a new phone since they likely wouldn't be able to service mine.
Also, we're on a family plan, and so if one of us was to get a new phone then we'd all have to get one.
Someone talked my mom into getting a smartphone as the next phone we have, but I've been staying away from them since I've been needing my money for other things.
Any good brands / models?
Thanks.

I have an AT&T family plan. I don't know about all their plans, but with ours, you can update one phone and sign a new 2 year contract only for that one line. I know. I just did it. Also, if the term of your contract has ended, usually after 2 years, you do not need to get your phone from AT&T. You can just flat out buy a phone from any store (Best Buy, Fry, etc) and use it on your AT&T plan. You can also outright buy a phone from AT&T and not have to renew your plan. Now if your old phone did not have a data plan, then you need to update that with AT&T before you can use a new smart phone regardless of where you got it.
Lastly, there are a number of third party phone repair businesses that could probably replace the battery in your old phone for you. You have a number of options. You really need to explore them all.

Why not just replace the battery in the old phone? I'm on the third battery for my Motorola V323 - I'd still be using my trusty old T721 if I hadn't broken the hinge.

outside of that - I don't know if AT&T supports it, but I've gone back to Motorola, and when I bought, I bought the top-of-the line model. that was, I think, about 4 years ago. I did accidentally break the charging port in my first one a couple years ago, and cracked the screen in August. the HDMI auto-sense is a bit wonky at the moment - I have to manually disable it periodically.
on the other hand - I'm accustomed to phones lasting about a year with the level of wear and tear I put them through.

I like the current batch of nokia's(last real ones before they go all-microsoft). They also have the benefit of being a Non-tech smartphone without being apple.
AT&T doesn't seem to have too many, but all 3 i noticed, 635/830/1520, give a good spread from basic to best.
Other than that it's hard to say without knowing what she or you want. -how big? -what is your most used functionality? -how techie can it be?

Don't cheap out too much, other than that, you're best of spending some time in a showroom or such to hold them.
Check what size you are comfortable with, both for pockets and for eyesight!
Are you an apple fan or not? Apple makes pretty decent devices and the controls are decent enough, but you will be limited to their system and paying a premium.
Google gives you the most choice, both in phones and in the apps and software area, but you are giving your information to them in exchange for this and their phones have a terrible trackrecord on safety and security.
Microsoft/lumia gives you only a few models to choose, but they tend to be quality gear and especially at middle to high-end have great features, the app market is a bit less comprehensive as google or apple, but you'll find all the usuals and most of the exotic stuff. Like apple, the os is well formed and not too hard to learn even for rookies.
I personally prefer lumia's as the call quality is better and they tend to come with good cameras.
