The free upgrade is also to help combat piracy of the OS, which becomes rather pointless if you can get it for free.
We should also keep in mind that Windows 10 will not just be running on desk and lap top PC's. It will also be running on Windows Phones and Tablets in line with the unified OS system Microsoft has had in mind for a while. I'm not sure about their tablets, but the phones don't seem to be selling all that well so expecting people to pay to upgrade the OS on them, or go to the time and trouble of upgrading through a PC, is probably unrealistic. Nor does it seem realistic to expect Window phone owners to buy a new phone simply for the OS - or for that matter new customers be to interested in buying an older phone they'd then have to try and upgrade. That would result in retailers getting stuck with large amounts of unsellable stock, and possibly even deciding not to stock the phones at all.

Windows phone was a complete fail. They bought a reputable phone company, and that failed. (They ran it into the ground...) The idea of "Oooo I must have windows on my phone" was a fail. Therefore, unless its cheap, people would rather choose android to "stick it to the man",... And yes, that is how deep the feeling is that is anti-windows.

Except by "sticking it to the man", that man being Microsoft, you're giving "the REAL man" unprecedented acces to your personal information by using Android without rooting your device. And most people don't know how to or simply don't dare to try rooting their device, because you could easily end up with a $300 brick in your hand, if you don't know what you're doing.

The only reason Google created Android and Chrome is to make money from your personal habits. In fact, that's the only reason Google exists at all. Yes, they provide valuable service, but you are going to pay for their services one way or another.

Yes, they provide valuable service, but you are going to pay for their services one way or another. Exactly. But at least they've made the OS open source, so if you root your device there are user-developed apps that can restrict what other apps have access to. When I had my Galaxy SII, I had a small app running in the background that blocked 3rd paty apps from showing me ads, attempting to access my contacts and attempting to determine my location. Generally, no app was allowed to send or receive anything that I hadn't reviewed and actively approved.

I am still using one of those. It JUST does phone calls, and some simple photo work. I havnt even turned the internet on on the thing.
Why?..because my own phone broke, and this was "spare" in the house after the kids upgraded to blackberry. They are now on Sony, but I cant use blackberry, I cant read the screen, its too damn small.

Repeat of a post on another thread as it is relevant here as well.. I am interpreting my pop up notification as saying when Windows 10 hits the market, the automatic software updates from Norton will update it to run with Windows 10. (antivirus software is the one software product I am willing to buy by subscription, since you are basically subscribing to a service.)
