I need powered self closing windows. my brother's beach house does not have thermostats. the central computer decides when to turn the heat on and off based on thermocouples inside secure boxes in the walls. And I'm sure it's very comfortable... Inside the walls. actually, it IS very comfortable - as long as the computer doesn't get BSOD. we'd discussed putting a red button on the cover that would light up when someone pressed it, but he didn't do it. and nobody seems to have figured out they can out a wet paper towel over the vents to make the thermocouple think the room is colder like we used to do in my high school, because the thermostats were in locked covers.

A friend of mine worked in building maintenance for a large office building. They would often get complaints about people being too hot or too cold. Their solution was simple. They put an answering machine on the maintenance office phone with a recorded message. The message said; "This is the automated temperature control system. If your section of the building is too hot, press 1. If it is too cold, press 2." Then there was a pause and it would say; "Thank you for your response. The temperature in your part of the building is being adjusted." Everyone thought it was great that they had such a system.

Stupidly Wasteful, we need to start at the top, big industry, Blast furnaces and industrial businesses that waste heat. Compared to them, an open door is small fry?...
But to TLW's problem, those that set the heating on then open a window, better education?...
And yeah, shut the bloody door. My kid will talk to his friend at the front door with the door open. For Ages.

With the cost of energy today, most businesses and industrial plants are pretty conscious about wasting heat energy. If there is a way to recoup some of the waste heat from a process, they will try to find it. Energy is money, and they will do all they can to prevent it from going up the stack.

Have you ever seen a thermal image of an oil refinery?.... (Try finding one online... I cant?...) Have you ever seen a thermal image of an air-conditioning system condensing unit? Or how about a radiator on a car? or even a thermal image of the human body. Sometimes, it's just cheaper to let the heat go then to try to recoup it. The thermodynamic cycle requires heat to go from a higher level to a lower level in order to extract work. At some point, there just isn't enough heat left to easily extract any useful work.

I think I heard rumors of a server farm that is selling their cooling heat to a local office complex.
on the steel plants and such: and sometimes the cost of capturing the heat is higher than the cost of the losses.

You can now buy a home server that acts like a radiator for you home. Nice. But you will need super-fast broadband. Iceland is host to a LOT of server farms, acres of it....

I recall seeing that. I thought some of the big server farms also ran coolant lines to nearby office complexes, but maybe I was remembering the mini servers.

I know of one server farm with its own office complex that is heated by the servers.

Having not actually read any of this thread yet, I'll just say this, if man is causing global warming, we don't have enough history to draw on to prove it is man causing it.
