the daughter of our game playing friends had her regional robotics competition yesterday, and we needed a day off so we went and watched. she did her best, but their team made a couple of minor strategic errors that knocked them out in the first elimination round.
errors like "when your coach makes a suggestion, keep doing what you were doing before" and "when the driver complains that the robot isn't functioning properly, keep doing what you were doing before" and "the best time to make a major change in your robot's performance is the night before the competition"
it also appeared that some of the schools in the competition took a rather looser view of the "students shall do all their own design, construction, and programming" rule than others.

Glad you posted this under "Sports Talk." Sports can be so much more than throwing or kicking a ball around or running in a circle. it is the only organized competitive sport her school has. if students REALLY want to participate in the more personally physical sports, they join the neighboring school's team. last year, there was one of those students.

I'm surprised. by which I mean I never new it was trying to make a comeback. Yeah, this is the first I’ve heard it mentioned in years

it has become almost routine - a tourist on a boogie board gets into a riptide, panics, tries to fight the current and wears himself out. we really need more public statements about "if you get caught in a rip, just stay afloat, conserve your energy, and signal people on shore."

Major League Baseball (MLB) officially kicked off it's shortened season last night. The NY Yankees beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 in a shortened game due to rain, and the SF Giants lost to the LA Dodgers 8-1. In related news, a bit of Trivia many don't know. The classic, "Take me out to the ball game" song actually has a 2nd verse. Yup, that's right. Here's the full song Take me out to the ball game Take me out with the crowd Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks I don't care if I never get back Let me root, root, root For the home team If they don't win it's a shame Aahh. For it's one, Two, Three strikes you're out At the old ball game All I need is just one chance I could hit a home run There isn't anyone else like me Maybe I'll go down in history And it's root, root, root For the home team Here comes fortune and fame 'Cause I know That I'll be the star At the old Ball Game 'Cause I know That I'll be the star At the old Ball Game

A little bit back I had cause to remember this clunker of a news piece: apnews.com/6eca51364f83411faa307688bcdcfd65"Jarvis in a Mazda takes pole in star-studded Rolex 24 field" The story is supposed to be about young race car driver Oliver Jarvis setting a track record during qualifiers for the Rolex 24 race and thereby earning the pole position. But not only would the average person *not* been able to tell this by the title, it's only in the 10th paragraph that he's even first mentioned.

Even after reading the article, I'm not exactly sure what they were talking about. But then, I'm not a big racing fan. Someone that's really into IMSA or NASCAR would probably have no problem deciphering the title.

If they can make a self driving car that handles the LA freeways, I wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to make one drive in circles.

"in a quarter mile, turn left... turn left... in an eighth mile, turn left... turn left... in a quarter mile, turn left... turn left... in an eighth mile, turn left... turn left..." NASCAR satnav on a related note, I actually saw a driver driving so badly I called it in to dispatch, this morning.

The information is pretty simple -> the results of the qualifying heats for the Rolex 24 race -> but was so badly presented that even an average reader risks being absolutely confused.
