www.gocomics.com/tankmcnamara/2022/01/19For those who don't know, long-running sports-themed comic strip "Tank McNamara" has an annual event known as the "Sports Jerk Of The Year", a fake awards show meant to highlight poor sportsmanship or otherwise unprofessional conduct in regards to athletics. Given everything that's happened in the world of sports in 2021, the cartoonist is now allowing *three* nominations per person instead of just one. I can think of three nominations just from the world of professional wrestling... (WWE owner Vince McMahon for his scapegoating his son-in-law over a strategic choice Vince himself made, WWE executive Nick Khan for the 100+ people he laid off, and wrestler Tommy Dreamer for his cavalier attitude when informed of serious allegations against veteran wrestler Ric Flair.)

I can think of one from the world of women’s swimming.

apparently it was multiple cardiac arrests at the beginning of the month, and now they are not expecting recovery. it's a tough call to make. we're working on contingency plans for ourselves, along with all the other stuff on my plate.

It's been confirmed that his family did indeed end his life support and that he passed soon after. most likely, they didn't get him restarted quickly enough on the cardiac arrests, and it led to brain death or a PVS, which is exactly the scenario we're addressing with our advance directives. what level of mostly dead is close enough to all the way dead that we let nature take its course. in my case, the verbiage is essentially, "if there's no expectation of me waking up again, keep the organs fresh just long enough to schedule any transplants you can do."

Round-up:
1. WWE CEO Vince McMahon has voluntarily gone out on leave while the board investigates an alleged $3 million hush money payment he is believed to have paid to an employee that he and talent management guy John Laurenitis had affairs with.
2. Jeff Hardy has been indefinitely suspended from AEW after a drunk driving arrest. Although Hardy had a suspended license after a previous arrest and was under an interlock restriction, he none-the-less managed to rent a car this past weekend.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is now investigating WWE.
It turns out that not only did Vince McMahon make a *lot* more hush money payments and non-disclosure agreements than previously believed, it's now believed that as much as $15 million of what he paid out was actually WWE money and not his own personal money.
If he did use company money for these payments then he was legally obligated to include them in the company's financial filings, and yet they never appeared.
If the SEC does determine that he failed to disclose payments made using company money, we could be looking at game-changing fines and penalties that might disrupt the company as we know it.

I'm shocked... shocked a major TV personality surrounded by yes men would do such a thing.

WWE investigated for fraud? Say it ain’t so. Depending upon how massive the fines are, the WWE could easily be in a very tight situation. They could, for example, be forced to sell off their regional promotions (which they use for talent development) or be hamstrung by a financing plan just as they're trying to reorganize to be more effective in the face of stronger competition. In a worst-case situation, *this* could be what finally forces the WWE into bankruptcy and restructuring. The WWE has the merchandise machine in place to where they could pay things down eventually, but either way they could be in trouble for years if the punishment is heavy enough.

All Elite Wrestling.
Hoo boy.
This past Sunday, AEW had one of their quarterly pay-per-view events. The grand finale of the event was wrestler CM Punk winning the championship back from Jon Moxley after Punk had to vacate due to a real life injury.
During the press conference immediately after the event, however, Punk went off-script and started trash-talking fellow wrestlers Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matt Jackson. This wasn't the first time he'd gone off-script in such a fashion, as a few weeks ago he'd gone off-script to trash-talk "Hangman" Adam Page, who Punk took the belt from in the first place.
Reports are contradicting each other, but what is known is that Omega and the Jackson brothers went to Punk's dressing room after the incident, confronting Punk and his trainer. Punches and a chair were thrown, and several third parties had to physically break it all up.
It's unknown what is going to happen now, especially as their flagship television show is *tonight*, but it's believed that Omega, Nick, Matt, Punk, and Punk's trainer are all now suspended pending an investigation and potential legal action. This has reportedly forced a number of last-minute changes to the card.

this was homecoming week, and due to a citywide power issue, I was actually working in town and able to take off a little bit early to do the parade before the game. and the team actually won the game, which sets a new record of one homecoming win in a row.

Meanwhile, my local football team just lost 51 - 20, due in part to a disastrous offensive strategy that included no less than 8 punts.
