If you've seen the old one(s), you know it is a religious themed movie. still, it delivers a message that I think is relevant regardless of beliefs or lack thereof.
as for the writing and cinematography, it was quite well done. despite the fact that (spoiler alert?) if you've seen the previous, you have a pretty good idea how the chariot race ends. it still manages to build suspense. they played a little bit fast and loose with both costume manufacturing, and the political and religious details; but not offensively so.
all in all, you would find it less outdated than the earlier one; but you will probably have the same opinion of the story.
addendum: you'll also find it over an hour shorter.
