I prefer them as part of fajitas.
But a related question: I know folks who swear that eating spicy food (onions and peppers both) helps open up clogged sinuses. Is there any medical truth to this?

Chinese hot mustard certainly opens my sinuses. Onions and peppers, even the hot ones, not so much.

A pea sized chunk of wasabi works fairly well.
Some of it may be the reaction to want to blow you nose after eating that stuff.

I think the more aromatic spices irritate your sinuses, causing increased secretions - which waters down the clog.

Onions may stink up your house so bad that visitors that may have the flu will stay away. So, I guess they really could help prevent you from getting the flu.

it may clear them some, but when it does it stings only if you do it right.

Green Cardamoms, or even Black ones, that have that certain aroma, certainly the presence of those in spicy food opens up MY sinuses.... Proven by steeping them in hot water and inhaling the fumes..... I had a cold, and that DID help me to breath more easily for a while.
Onions, they are put in use as a anti-paint smell thing when I am decorating.... I dont know for sure, but I THINK they have odour control properties against Paint smell.... Or is it just that I prefer Onion smell to Paint?....
However, I have experimented with sliced Lemon, and that works as well.....
And then I have started using Water based paint, and the low odour paint, and that works even better?....
But there are just times when you HAVE to break out the Oil based paint, such as bathroom woodwork that will get damp.
