Technical Aid, Tech help, why this board?... I asked for this board to be put here, so can I spend a few moments to say why. It has come to my attention that several people have asked for Tech Help, or posted important posts such as the one concerning the problem with Java, in different parts of the Citadel... So hence THIS board..... If you have any questions Computer related, ask here... unless its your Fridge?.. I know them things is clever, but I have no idea how to "Sync" it to a lap top or how to get one of them modern ones to order Milk for you?... If I have found anything important such as Firefox is now version 18.0.0, or that CCleaner has released an important update, I will post it, but if YOU find anything you think we may like to know, or should know, such as Anonym did in the watercooler citadelofmyths.freeforums.net/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=421Please let us all know.... I know we have some knowledgeable folks out there, so get in and ask... the silliest question is the one you DONT ask... and some of us are quite used to being presented with lap tops that are not just infected with Viruses, they are positively Bio-Hazard infested, and some of us I know know how to remove root-kits by hand......

I recently got an iPad, ios6. (Saved for it, loved the accessibility options available for vision impairment)
I use Safari and my wifi at home for the Internet as at this time, I can't justify the cost of a cellular data plan for it.
Anyway, so far, I have not been out with it, to use free wifi at any place that has it.
My question is, what are the security concerns of using free wifi? Is my device subject to or likely to be "hacked". What can I do to prevent this?
Should I simply avoid using free wifi? No worries or what?

Get in there. Or out there... however you look at it?....
Your computer (I-pad) will of course have its own security package, Anti-Virus etc?... well, it should have?...
The security used on your home network, WPA or WEP MINIMUM, is there to stop other people using it. It wont protect your computer on its own... Free wireless, you have many people using it, but that doesnt matter, its whats on YOUR computer...
Common Myth is that Apple cant be hacked?... it can, but not so often, so get out and invest n some form of Anti-Virus for Apple. Norton do one for OS10 and OS11 for a reasonable price, I dont know what operating system you have on your Ipad...
If you have anti-nasty software, you are as safe anywhere else as you are at home.....
There is no extra risk outside your own home network, because if you have the anti-nasty already, thats what its there for, and mobile devices are built to be mobile...
So get out there and enjoy it "Mobile"..........

Cool thanks. This is my first apple device. (Wife does have an older iPhone, but I have fooled with it much)
I've done some digging around in "Settings" and dug deeper into the security features.
I think I'll be okay out in the world of free wifi.

The bigger problem with tablets are rouge apps, aways read the permisions you allow the apps. If you allow text sending by an app be prepared for big phone bills.

Rory, I dont do "tablet", so can you explain that please?...
If I was sending a text message, surely I would use the usual route of either Email via internet exploder/Firefox/webmail/etc or "txt" via the usual mobile phone rote.....
I dont do txt by the way, in 15-20 yrs of owning a mobile, if I have sent 100 txt msg's I would be surprised?....
So what are there "rouge apps" you speak of?.. (Just so as I dont get one by mistake?..)

I think he meant rogue app's that eat up your credit by surreptitiously sending and receiving data (often at premium rates).

Many apps process micro-payments. Most of these are up front when they want to charge you and process the payment through the store. Some apps like different format text sending editors require texting permission to work (perfectly OK for the texting app) these charge at standed text rate unless you text a premium phone line. The rogue apps I am on about hide the texting from the user and text a premium rate line they own every time the app is activated.
Other gaming apps aimed at kids process automatic payments (which you allow on original download) every time an in game improvement is bought as part of the games. Kids don't understand money and have maxed out many parents credit cards. The worst I heard was $ 10000 on tapfish which made the news.
Some apps request permission for your contact list and calendar (Facebook) this means they can email and phone your contacts as you have given them the details.
Some apps require camera control, this means whenever the app is running it can record video and sound.
Apple tends to be better a shutting down or not approving bad apps. Google don't have a approval process, anyone can make an app a sell it on android with no scruntiny. Android does have a very good rating system, so always read the reviews.
So read all the permission descriptions. Ask yourself if you trust the publisher. Read more than the first three reviews. Ask if you trust the publisher.
Remember if it's free, you're the product
EDIT: If you own a smartphone or tablet owned by the company you work for, it most likely will have ironcell installed as an admin.
This means the company can remote control your device invisibly, see all data stored on it, activate the camera and GPS and wipe the data ckezn to a factory reset after downloading all the data. Just be careful where you leave the phone and what data you store on it. You don't want an office argument turning into blackmail.
Anything with admin access can do this, ironcell has all the tools programmed already for ease of use.

More a tip than Tech help and many might already be aware of it. Its for the visually challenged Win 7 if you hold the Ctrl down and scroll using the wheel on the mouse it adjust the print size on screen.

That has been the case since Windows 98, if not Windows 95, but one that for some reason isn't well known.

It is part of the accessibility options Microsoft added to Windows to help users who had eye problems, which is why I *think* it was first used in Windows 95. There is a way to zoom in without using a mouse wheel, but I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. It is one of these things that those who don't normally need to use have no idea exists, and which requires those who do need to use it to trawl through the help section of Windows.

I don't know if you have a problem seeing the posts but I do know Fmr may and SD may. I am unaware of any one else but there may be. A mouse with a scroll cost around $4-00 here for those who work the internet with a PC or a PC derivative. IPhone/Ipads your on your own

Thanks Private. I've had no reason to tinker with the zoom function in the last few years so forgot how to change it. Hopefully that will help any members who are having problems.
