Hey all
I've been looking into buying a new media conversion program online (we have 2 different cameras in the house, not including our phones and they all create different formats).
I've been checking some of the free trial versions out there to see which one I like best, but there's one thing that seems to be missing from all of them and that's the ability to load up multiple files for conversion at once, hitting a button and then just leaving it to do its thing over night.
I have multiple different formats (mpeg2, mp4, 3gp and some others I don't remember) from both the cameras we have now and from old ones, including an old SonyEricsson phone. I'd like to convert them all to avi Xvid format so they can all be played on our Samsung TV, but I don't want to spend my time loading the files into the program one by one like I'm doing now with AVS VideoConverter, which I bought a month back (BIG mistake!).
Any suggestions?

Batch conversion... ok, I know ONE program that does batch conversion of photographs, and that is irfanview.
I do NOT know of any batch conversion Video thing.
Its a memory thing....
Video conversion is heavy on the Memory, in that it HAS to use a HUGE temporary file..... So much so that you can only do so much at once, otherwise you would run out of memory.... In these modern days of Terabyte memory type machines, its no so much of a problem. However...
Batch conversion of Video. The machine will check if it has enough spare memory available before it tries to convert a file... Now with Photographs, there will be a maximum size of maybe 20 meg, and that is RAW data, so the maths on available space to convert is quite easy, how many to convert times 20meg, times three, and is that kind of space available without problems.... (Times three... Temp and Final converted plus allow an extra as "Overhead" just to make sure...)
With Video?.... Ok, so your first Video is maybe 5 mins long, but the second, third, and up to [x] number?... and if that is a 45 min long, you will need 1.5 hrs of memory space.....
Now on to the actual conversion.... Sometimes this is done by flooding your Ram, sometimes Temp file on Disk, and sometimes virtual memory. Which is often unstable. No one can guarantee a full 90 min film conversion in one attempt. Queueing up a batch convert of Video?... No one is prepared to even attempted that because no one is willing to stick their neck out and say they can guarantee more than one or two without problems... so if someone tried to batch convert a dozen short films?...
Plus.....
Copying Films. How does anyone know this isnt a piracy thing. I am in no way suggesting YOU are doing that.... but who else would use such a program?... I think you may find batch video conversion is a dissuaded issue due to piracy concerns.....

Found a free one that does the trick for most of my files. It's called "Pazera Converter's Suite" and it easily takes 20-30 files at a time, provided that they're all the same format to begin with.
Yes, it does require a lot of resources and I can't really use my computer for anything else while it's converting, but it works. Now I can just load up all the files that are the same format (like mp4 for example) start the conversion as the last thing I do before I go to bed and then they're all done in the morning when I wake up.
About the piracy thing. Making, owning or using the program isn't illegal in any way. It's what you use it for that could potentially get you into trouble. Can it be used to convert pirated content from one format to another? Sure it can. But as long as you don't, there's no problem. This program can't be used to directly commit acts of copyright infringement, as it can't rip DVDs and such. It's for conversion only, so you have to get the illegal content onto your computer in another way, if that's what you plan to use it for.
