Sometimes an actor takes a role and makes it hers or his where any one else playing the part just doesn't come up to the mark for me this is a classic

Naah ... This is the definitive portrayal of Julius Ceasar.

Are we just talking about roles that have been played by numerous actors and trying to find the best one or are we also talking roles that have only been played by one actor who did it so well that no one else should ever even make an attempt at that role?
If we're talking numerous actors for one roll: Who's your best Batman?
If we're talking a single role that should never be touched by anyone else: Denzel Washington as Malcolm X

If we're talking numerous actors for one roll: Who's your best Batman? Bad timing for this one; Warner Brothers just announced that they've cast Ben Affleck as Batman for an upcoming Batman / Superman crossover film. Pretty much any Batman actor to date is going to look good by comparison.

I really can't picture Affleck in that role. It just seems wrong.
For me the best one to date has been Christian Bale and the worst one has been George Clooney. Which is weird because I usually like Clooney, but this was just wrong for him. Even Val Kilmer was a better fit than him and Kilmer isn't usually better than Clooney at anything!

Marlin Brando (Mark Anthony) in the 1953 (?) production of Julius Caesar is one such for me. Sylvester Stallone in Rambo First blood is another.

Everybody in Princess Bride, with the possible exception of the albino. he was the only one that another person might have been able to do better.
(well, the ROUS kind of phoned it in, too)

The problem with Clooney's version of Batman was the script, director and producers not the actors themselves. Clooney *should* have been a perfect choice as he would have looked the part, and I'm guessing sounded the part if he lowered his voice. Unfortunately he got stuck with the lamest version, rather than a more serious Batman in which I suspect he'd have done rather well. *Aside* I recall seeing the trailer with a friend, and joking that we didn't have to go see the film (Clooney's Batman) because we'd just seen the entire plot and all the best bits in the trailer. Turned out that I was right...I just wish I'd realised that before going to see the full movie.... *Back on topic* What About Arnie as the Terminator? Or as Conan the Barbarian?

I still think Arnie's best role was in Last Action Hero. the problem with fictitious roles is that unless the first person to play the role totally blows it; they will own it by default. case in point - I think if Arnie hadn't done terminator, Tommy Lee Jones - at his prime - could have become the definitive terminator.

Unfortunately he got stuck with the lamest version, rather than a more serious Batman in which I suspect he'd have done rather well. Point taken. The story and script were both pretty lame. New one: The Hannibal Lecter series First off, no one can EVER play Lecter as well as Anthony Hopkins did. Gaspard Ulliel did a respectable job in "Hannibal Rising", but the only reason that worked was that we were seeing a young Lecter that had yet to evolve into the sophisticated sociopath/psychopath that we know and love Hopkins for portraying. Mads Mikkelsen in the new TV show "Hannibal" is just freakin' awful!!! (Not a WORD from anyone about him being Danish!!! ) The role of Clarice Starling will always belong to Jodie Foster. The sequel to "Silence of the Lambs" showed that perfectly. Despite being a good actress, Julianne Moore didn't fit the part. Jodie Foster just owned it and no matter who you'd assigned to take her place, it wouldn't have worked.

(well, the ROUS kind of phoned it in, too) I think Mel Brooks would have done a good job as the albino - then again maybe not he'd have crack to many jokes, & the albino's meant to be creepy not funny. But I love the Princess Bride! It has my favourite Movie line/quote of all time: But if your talking about people you just can't see ever being replaced in a role by someone else, then its got to be Humphrey Bogart as Samuel (Sam) Spade in The Maltese Falcon (1941). Detective Tom Polhaus: [picks up the falcon] Heavy. What is it?
Sam Spade: The, uh, stuff that dreams are made of.Classic!

I second that Here's another one: I know a lot of people don't like Brad Pitt, but if there's one thing he does better than most, it's playing totally bonkers! His roles in both 12 Monkeys and Fight Club show that perfectly and I'm not sure anyone could've played those two roles half as well as he did.

However, I did like Jeff Bridges portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in the 2010 version of True Grit, but I don't think Bridges could pull off the same role in a remake of Rooster Cogburn as The role in Rooster Cogburn was much more "wordy" due to the interaction with Eula Goodnight, portrayed by Katharine Hepburn. Though my belief that Bridges couldn't pull of the role in a remake of Rooster Cogburn, is partly/mostly due to the fact that I believe Katharine Hepburn is absolutely unable to be replaced as Eula Goodnight. Hailee Stienfeld did a good job at replacing Kim Darby in True Grit, though Darby's role in True Grit was her biggest role, in an otherwise lackluster career of a mediocre actress. Katharine Hepburn definitely made the role of Eula Goodnight her role and only her role.

Just saw Robocop trailer & have to say not a fan. The visuals are good but the plot just didn't grab me enough to spend $20 to go see it. I think I'll wait for the DVD.
