As those of you who have either been following the thread on new episodes or who have caught the adverts on Discovery in the US will be aware, the new season will start in January 2014 with a Star Wars Special. Those of you who also have long memories will also remember that I started a Star Wars Challenge thread back in February 2013.
First off some very good news - It has just been confirmed by my Bothan that Mythbusters did indeed use three of the ideas that were posted in the thread. Because some people might not want to spoil the surprise by knowing which ideas until the episode airs I'll say which ones at the end of this post.
Next comes the apology and a explanation. I'd try to look abashed but the big grin would ruin the effect.
The reason why they used ideas posted in the Star Wars Challenge thread was because it was an officially requested one, I just didn't let you know that. Back in late January 2013 I was made aware through my sources that Mythbusters were trying to develop a Star Wars episode, but were having trouble finding testable ideas. I was asked if I could start a thread to get ideas, but because this was Star Wars I was also asked to keep things quiet. As luck would have it we had been discussing Star Wars and Star Trek elsewhere at the time, so I used that as the reason for starting the thread.
Before anyone asks - No, I have not been asked to keep any other idea requests quiet. This was a special case due to the high profile of the intended subject.
I big, BIG thank you to all of those who participated in the thread. From what I can deduce it seems that the ideas we came up with proved a God send when they were developing this episode. Give yourselves a pat on the back and a celebratory beverage of your choice.
*Spoilers*
I don't have a full list of everything Mythbusters may have done in the Star Wars episode. However I have had to confirmed that three ideas posted on here made it into the episode. These were;
The Death Star Swing.
The Tauntan survival myth.
The Ewok log trap.

{Moved to Show Facts and links and removed it as an Announcement, since only mods can post in that section of the board - CM} Incidentally, I was given permission to let you know that the ideas used come from here as a Christmas gift of sorts. The other reason was to be able to show you all that yes, your ideas and input ARE being read and passed on to the show - something I was aware of but couldn't exactly prove given that only one idea had thus far made it onto the show, and then it was something that was originally posted on the old Discovery Boards. Other than Star Wars, it will be interesting to see what else *may* have been picked up - I have no better idea than the rest of you here. It does appear as if Ice cannon was picked up going off the sneak preview video, and I *think* a couple of other ideas may have caught their eye. But that doesn't mean they got tested or will be aired in the upcoming season. Those of you with long memories may recall that I predicted that this season would probably be the first in which ideas from here might appear. It is nice to be right for a change It just remains to be seen how right. A quick note/observation here; Since TC is not an 'official' site it is rather unlikely that we would/will get a name check. It is possible that individual members *might* get named, but that happened rarely even when people were posting on Discovery boards so don't expect anything beyond 'fan site' at best.

I'd guess that is possible for the Tauntaun Myth, given the amount of information and discussion that went on in relation to that. In fact based on what little I can tell from the sneak-peek video it does seem as if they took a couple of points from the thread when designing their rig - such as not using animal guts. The other two ideas seem to be fairly straightforward even without any additional discussions in the thread. Having said that I do wonder if they will raise the point that no one outside the Star Wars Universe really knows how strong a Scout Walkers armour and internal structure is. (I'm guessing btw that at best they could only call the Ewok trap 'plausible' because of this). I'll confess that as much as I'm looking forward to the SW special, I may get a bigger kick out of Ice cannon (assuming I'm correct in them having tested it) since this was a longer running idea. And one that was dreamt up (and discussed in detail) independently of MB - meaning it wasn't an idea MB had that they wanted more information/ideas on. For the record, I'm going to claim the Death Star Swing as my fourth show idea, since I posted it in the OP. This also means I insist on being credited for getting Kari into the Princess Leia costume For that alone I should be given God-like status by most male (and some female) Mythbusters and Star Wars fans... Nope, thank you. Other than being able to provide a place where MB could ask for ideas 'unofficially', the hard work really came from the members here. You were able to find ideas from the film that didn't revolve around fictional technology or the 'Force', and work out ways these things could be tested. The only other option would have been for MB to have asked for such ideas on the Discovery Boards or Facebook. Both of these would have been picked up by the press within minutes, which they didn't want.

I should have been more specific that I was concerned about the angle of the line letting them drop too far to swing onto the ledge.

The swing was done for real, and I *think* in one take. However they were using safety harnesses - something that I picked up because the story goes that Mark Hamill's harness was partly damaged when he put it on, but the stunt coordinator told him it wasn't a problem...This about a minute before they made the swing....
In terms of the swing itself. The line appeared to be fairly tight, and the two platforms were at the same height. So they should have been at the same height at the far side - assuming that the pivot point was more or less an equal distance from both sides, which seems to have been the case from what I can recall.

(if you remember, there was a short discussion of that happening when they swung from the sailbarge to the skiff after the Sarlaac scene)

LOL & if you can somehow manage to get her into Princess Leia's tin foil bikini then you'll end up having even more fans than the Mythbusters.

As long as I've got 'bragging rights' here amongst my 'peers' in the Citadel. After reading back through the a Star Wars thread, I found that I failed to mention something very important about the Taun Taun survival myth. To late now I suppose, though according to what conclusion they reach on the myth, or if they think of it themselves or not, I can bring it up when/if I demand a revisit!

The 'pipe' was one of a couple that were on the object protecting from the 'ceiling'.
It is fairly clear from the direction and angle Luke was looking in, as well as the angle at which he threw the grapple, that he was aiming at a target above and midway between the two ledges. This would also hold with how the stunt was performed on set, where the rig was connected in relation to the two platforms and the location of the top of the wire when they were performing the stunt.
In the real world they would have needed something to hide the rig, and the projection was ideal for this. It would also have been the natural and logical thing for Mark Hammil to have aimed at when throwing the grapple.

I USED to own the trilogy on VHS (the first remastering) I also used to own a machine that would play them.
