Don't know if you missed anything. My dipole was down but I tried listening with the old straight wire antenna I use to use for SWL. Besides all the traffic, there was a lot of QRM from thunderstorms going through the area. I didn't hear SR or anyone else from the net.

I listened for awhile, but never called. The band was very crowded. Sounds like no one else made it either.

I was listening as well, but I was getting a lot of QRM/N. I had a couple that where booming in, but I cannot remember the QTH. I was bouncing from 7175 up to 7182 for awhile but after 15-20 minutes I gave up. Once Greg gets his dipole up we can try again. I am still thinking that we should have it mid week -- at least there hopefully be less QRM.

You should give yourselves a code phrase so you know you are talking to someone from here. Maybe 'All Hail the Cybermortis!'...Don't look at me like that

I think it was there was so much going on the bands we could not get in anyway. I was waiting for SR to call, since he is de facto "net control". As for our codes we use this will be helpful -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_codes#Amateur_radio

I am going to be off work on Friday (and Thursday), is there any chance any of you will be up to QSO sometime Friday?
Also -- not to brag, but the 2012 Field Day results are out. We did not do as well as previous years -- we where 9th in 2A (out of 400 some odd), 44th overall (all classes) and where 1st in State/Division. I was not up to it as much as other years, did not even get to operate, although I was GOTA coach for a couple of hours. I really need to get on the air more, I just either do not have the time, I am too tired, and/or the bands are not working for me. Maybe "Santa" will bring me a new tuner (perhaps an auto-tuner for my ICOM 718) for Christmas. Ah well, wishful thinking, see ya all later -- 73.

Congrats on your field day activities. Doesn't sound like you did too bad at all.
Unfortunately, I'm heading down to the in-laws in West Virgina tomorrow morning and won't be back until late Sunday. Probably will miss Sunday's net if it happens.
Really would like to see us try moving the net to a weekday where there may be a little less clutter. Just about any weekday evening would work for me. The later the better.

I can do most any weekday also except Fridays. (I run a Net at 0100Z at 7.185 on Friday) So how about Thursdays at or near 7.17. Maybe 02:00Z ? Band is a little better than and less QRM. Input?

Except for this Thanksgiving, Thursdays will work for me. 0200Z is good too.

Congrats on your field day activities. Doesn't sound like you did too bad at all. Well...the past few years we have been in the top three in 2A (last year we where 2nd), so while 9th is "good" we have done better. Thursdays are good for me, except on the 4th Thursday of the month I have club meeting (except Nov, and Dec, and sometimes June). Then again we don't always make it anyway.

We still have not gotten together, however I do have some "news" -- I am now a VE with W5YI. I am planning on doing my first session tomorrow night (12/18)

I had a rather interesting experience on the air this afternoon.
First off, I got my first International contact. VE5F** in Ontario, Canada. According to Google Earth, 390 Miles, on 2 meter!!! This was though the Wide Area Repeater Network that goes though most of Pennsylvania and then some.
Thin things got weird. Though the same network, I made contact with a KB2BKW, said he was out of Brooklyn NY. Thing is, that call sign is not listed in the QRZ database. I check with the operator and that is the correct call sign. I asked the operator if they were new, wondering if QRZ simply hadn't updated their database yet. He said that he had been licensed for over 10 years. After I asked him that, he quickly said he was only testing a rig and got off the air. Did I stumble onto someone who shouldn't have been on the air?

The FCC database doesn't have any information on that call either. I think someone just made it up.
On a side note, I've been helping a friend study up for his test. He got his General about three weeks ago and just passed his Extra last week. Congratulations to Wayne (AC9EF)

Just me, but these new calls bug me. Used to be the US was W* east of the Mississippi and K* west. What was wrong with that? Since we were using WA*, WB*, KA*, KB* I can't imagine they were running out of calls. 2 x 26 x 10 x 26 x 26 x 26 = 9,139,520 available. Plus the calls that do not have 3 letters at the end or were just the W or K (not WA or KA) and perhaps the N* calls for MARS stations. More Hams than that?

All the 2x2 calls starting with "A" are going to Extras. They are still giving out 2X3 calls starting with "K" to new Techs and Generals.
There are currently about 700,000 licensed Amateurs in the United States.
I think that "K" west and "W" east was just for commercial broadcast stations. In the 60's my dad had a business band call that started with a K and that was east of the Mississippi.
The FCC also doesn't automatically give out calls that were issued and expired or are assigned to a now silent key. After the calls have been unassigned for two years, you can request it and they will usually give it to you.
When I got my Extra about 9 months ago, they gave me AC9CL. I applied for a vanity call of K9GEW that had been expired for 5 years and got it. That's not an Extra class call but I didn't like the AC9 call either and GEW are my initials. My original call was WB9WWI but I got that back in the early 70s.

Now that you mention it, I think you are right as to the K/W west/east only being commercial stations.
Perhaps some day I'll get off my duff and get my ham ticket back. Perhaps my old call is still available - WA9PND
