I just remembered something.
There's a questionably canon third-party "sequel" to the original Doom series which has an older Doomguy as the senior NCO at a remote outpost when it gets hit by a Trojan Horse in the form of a supply ship that's been hijacked by a group of demons.
In that sense, J&A's numbers might reflect Doomguy after 20 more years, several of which would have been behind a desk.

I got to thinking about this episode today, and in the process I remembered something key about the classic "Doom" games.
The test the team did was set up in a "level" that was completely flat.
Most of the levels in the original "Doom" games weren't. Now, they were all level in "Wolfenstein", the predecessor to "Doom", but the original "Doom" games had stairs, elevators, ledges to jump between, drops, and a host of other features. Later games, like "Rainbow Six" and "Command & Conquer: Renegades", would add ladders and other things you needed to actively climb up / down.
Sample level -
Doom II, Level 1:
The level takes place in a warehouse facility on the outskirts of the space port you're trying to liberate. You start the mission on a balcony overlooking the inside of one of the storage areas. As this is a first mission, you only have your pistol and brass knuckles to begin with.
If you turn around, you'll note that the balcony actually runs along the side of the building for a ways. Following the balcony out to the end gives you the chainsaw, which is just sitting there. So that's now three weapons you have.
Two Zombie Soldiers are guarding the storage room. Your best bet is to shoot them down with your pistol, and then shoot down whatever reinforcements come in response to the noise. Once the area is cleared, you drop down into the room. You collect the ammo from their guns and then go up a set of stairs into the hallway. A second storage room is on the opposite side of the hall; inside is several Zombie Soldiers. Flip the switches in the room in the right order, and a hidden alcove will emerge in which you have a set of body armor (IIRC); this is in addition to the medkits and the ammo from the zombies.
Once you clear this room, you head back into the hallway and turn left, at which point you walk several steps until you reach the end of the hallway. Straight ahead of you is an odd grey wall. On the other side of this wall is a rocket launcher and a group of rockets. However, you will need to use the "no clipping" code to access it (supposedly, you can only open the door on "nightmare" difficulty).
On the right-hand side at the end of the hallway is another door. Once you clear the monsters out, you'll see an Imp standing atop an alcove inside the room. This alcove is actually the top of an elevator, which you can somehow lower (don't recall if it's a switch or if you have to stand in the puddle of water in the middle of the room). Once you're atop the elevator, you can press a switch that will open the front door to the warehouse. You go down the stairs into the grass outside, where there are more Imps. Killing them will net you the shotgun and IIRC some ammo. Once you're done, you go back inside that last room and open the "exit" door. This takes you down into the underground tunnel system beneath everything, meaning either stairs or a ladder.
So just in this one level, you've got two flights of stairs, a dead drop, and an elevator before you enter an underground tunnel system. By the time you enter this system, you'll have your pistol, a chainsaw, a shotgun, and a rocket launcher in addition to full body armor.

I used to take part in fell running, on the organizational side, as in, as part of the Rangers, I provided rescue for any injuries. There is 3,000 ft of climb in one of the events. The runners RAN up the hill faster than I can walk....
I progress onto Military service, we are doing a fitness exercise, and the hopeful SAS trainee's passed us yomping at a speed faster than I can run, with them carrying a 60lb sack and full battle dress with weapon. Some of them were not even sweating.... Stairs dont slow them down. Trust me, stairs are nothing to them. They can go up faster than I can Fall down stairs...?...
