Myth: It's just fine to leave _____ in the car.
Experiment:
This would be similar to the "Biscuit Bazooka" myth from the first round of pilots.
Every single year, people all over leave their kids and pets in the car during the summer.
Perhaps we could get the Mythbusters to do a PSA on the matter.
The set-up would involve three thermometers. One would be out in the "open air", representing a person who is out and about. The second would be in a vintage vehicle of some sort with an all-metal body. The third would be in a comparable modern-day vehicle with a plastic body. Once more, the team would heat the vehicles up to a specific external temperature, such as 100 Fahrenheit (here in Texas, it can hit 110 F before the heat index is factored in). Once the temperature hits this amount, they'd inspect the thermometers to see what the internal temperatures is vs. the official external temperature.
One test would be done with the windows rolled up. One would be done with the windows rolled down. Both sets of numbers would be recorded and given to medical experts (such as a doctor and a veterinarian), who could tell exactly what would happen to a person or animal under those heat conditions.
Maybe this will get some people to pay more attention...

to add to it - one test with the windows open one half inch (about 10 mm) which is the average that people crack their windows thinking it will keep their car cool.
I vote they do some quick visual demonstrators, too, though. not sure what - I've had plastic melt and deform in a car.
in more related data: a couple weeks ago, we had a local arrested for baking a dog to death in a car.

My suggestion would be to leave various items of food next to each thermometer.
Possible items:
*one packet of fruit snacks, still in the packet
*one packet of fruit snacks, packet completely opened for immediate visual inspection
*one cut of meat
*one 100-count set of newspaper bags, still on the holder
I recommend these items as these are things I have (had) in my all-metal Buick. The bags are so that I can double-bag or re-bag newspapers on the go, while I sometimes keep jerky and fruit snacks in the car as quick energy boosters while I'm on the road.
During Fall, Winter, and Spring, I have no issues with either of these items.
But Summer? I have to rotate out the bags I keep in the car, as the plastic is beginning to slowly melt; the bags are sticking together in the holder, and individual bags don't even want to open up without effort. The fruit snacks actually did melt, such that I had to pull them out of the car last week and stick them in the refrigerator. And the jerky? Cooked. What little bit of juice was left in the pieces all cooked out, causing the baggies (if sealed) and the lids on the canisters (if not) to become coated, while the meat itself became brittle and with reduced flavor.

I also have a box of cracker sandwiches, the kind in which two crackers have a filling between them.
The cheese filling on these crackers has basically turned to powder in the heat.

I know someone that has a company fuel card that they used to keep in the sunvisor, it was okay most of the year, until in the summer in warped and the magnetic strip was damaged.

With all the news coverage this is getting, it shouldn't even be necessary for the MuthBusters to do this test, but sadly, I think it is.
It's amazing to me how wrong things have to go before some people get it. They'll sit and watch the news and see one of these stories of dogs or babies being left in hot cars for hours to die of heat stroke and go, "Oh, that's horrible! What stupid, mean people!" Then they'll go to the store the next day and leave Fido or Junior in the back seat, like they think their kids or pets are somehow immune to the heat.
When possible, I usually take my dog with me most places I go, but in this heat, unless I can bring him literally everywhere with me, he's staying home. I'm not leaving him tied up in front of a store in this heat, let alone in the car!

I was talking to Girlfriend about this thread earlier today, as the topic came up naturally in converation, and we reached the agreement that the people who would truly need to see this particular show probably won't be watching anyway. Then again, if this saves just one life - human or otherwise - it would still be worth it.

"Someone" did the test about white or black car, which heats up fastest, and no surprise, its black.
However.... They didnt do "Tinted winders".
We aint aiming it at them.?... The terminal stupid will always find a better way to be stupid. We are however aiming at those who witness such, and the better educated they are, the more likely they may intervene. If its a kid or an animal in that car, they dont need to be victims of their legal owners stupidity....
Now all of US know to be inside the car, even in a thinderstorm..... thats thin thunder.... But get the hell out in a hail-storm and find something with a thick roof.

No, Hail makes it a THUDerstorm..... with emphasis on the THUD, especially when flying planes?..
