The Long Earth, Terry Pratchet and Stephen Baxter
I need to explain part of the plot, but am trying hard to NOT post spoilers, but its hard to describe a book without some of the plot...
Not a Diskworld, just a parallel Earth.
Parallel Dimensions, they exist...
And when one person "Steps through" the divide, Joshua Valienté accompanied by an artificial intelligence that claims to be a Motorcycle Repairman from Tibet reincarnated, Lobsang, they decide to explore not just that "First" parallel earth, but maybe there are more... how many more?.. are they inhabited by Humans?... other humanoid species?.. how did evolution happen on those variances of earth?...
As their technology becomes a free resource, in a small box if you can build it yourself, other people began to "Step through" the divide, and make new colonies.
Is this a re-visit to maybe how America was populated?.. people "Going west" into the unknown?...
How will they survive, how will they manage when only certain other objects will "Step", some objects, some metals, will not...
STOP READING HERE is you dont want to know what happens next.
Political Movements, of course, people who want to be "away from the political turmoil of "Datum earth", the one we are all on now, how will they react to those who step through who want to make this new earth a carbon copy...
How will those who refuse to step manage on the original earth.
And just how far out can you step?... MILLIONS?... and what will you encounter?... other civilisations...?.. and when they find out Humans are about, how will they react?..
And when its discovered that some humans are natural steppers, dont need the technology, and that this is common with other inhabitants of other remote worlds.....
I am going to stop now, because all I can say is it was a fascination read, Science Fantasy at its best, and both Terry and Stephen have made a very good book working together with this.
Some of it is funny, some of it is serious, but in all, its a damn good cant put down read.
I cant give it stars, because I cant do more than say 11 out of 10, but then, I know the authors, both of them, have read their works before, and already knew that this would be a good book.
