summary: surprisingly entertaining.
yes, it is unabashedly cheesy, yes the premise is patently unbelievable, yes it has Adam Sandler in it.
despite all this, I was entertained.
the premise, for those who haven't looked into it: Earth sends a space probe with cultural samples, including footage from a video game championship into space. aliens receive the probe, take it as a challenge and come to earth to have a battle to the death - in the form of 80s video games. it falls to the grown competitors in the video game championship to save the world.

I remember people saying that they *wanted* the film to tank because Adam Sandler was the lead; they figured that if the film tanked, he wouldn't be allowed to make any more movies.
Instead, we got one of the bigger "sleeper" hits of the summer, right alongside religious film "War Room".

I though Adam Sandler did a very good job in it. - he seems to have stepped away from his "annoying man-child" niche.

In UK, Adam Sandler is sort of known as "Light entertainment", "one of them that was in Friends", "Does the comedy films", but I dont really sense any animosity towards him?... So what did he do wrong.... And I can name quite a few other film people I want to see "tanked" so badly I would even go as far as helping the film tank... For Instance, Hugh Grant. pronounced the same way you say You Twit. He is that bumbling excruciatingly embarrassing "English person upper class twit" that did Notting Hill, and other such roles, all "similar", he is not the type of person the REAL British person wants to be associated with. I would take two of Adams over one half of the crud produced by one hugh film any day....

I am not entirely sure I have ever seen Hugh Grant act. as for what adam sandler did, a lot of his earlier movies are based on him being abrasive and childish.

I quite liked him in 'The Wedding Singer' and '50 First dates' I have known people just like Hugh Grant, not liked but known, in the past.

Total box office sales were $243 million on a budget of $88 million. However half of the box office sales go to the theater chain and distributor, so takings for the studio would be around $120 million. When you further deduct marketing costs (which are not included in the production budget) it would have made a small profit. But not enough to be considered a big hit, nor I suspect enough to warrant any talk about a sequel.

Sandler is funny for what he does, but it has been a niche thing for him to play that annoying man-child role. If you don't like that, don't watch an Adam Sandler movie.
However, he has done other stuff. I personally think he did a good job on the remake of "The Longest Yard" and when the star of the original (Burt Reynolds) says the same, you can jump and scream and cry all you want about how much better the original was, but it doesn't make the remake bad.
I agree with mrfatso on "The Wedding Singer" and "50 First Dates". I also quite liked "Big Daddy" and the first of the two "Grown Ups" movies and he was downright brilliant in the drama "Reign Over Me" with Don Cheadle.
Sandler just seems to be one of those actors you either love or hate. For most of the "love" crowd, he can do no wrong and for most of the "hate" crowd, he can do no right.

I will always find him a little annoying, but I can appreciate a character who is a little annoying if that is his role in the story.

Now, there's a role where the character he was playing was supposed to be annoying and he knocked that one out of the park!

Ever seen "Bulletproof"? Now, there's a role where the character he was playing was supposed to be annoying and he knocked that one out of the park! I have not. I'm guessing I skipped it on purpose. If you like kind of "traditional" 90's action-comedies, it's actually a really funny movie. Damon Wayans plays an LAPD cop who's gone undercover to befriend Sandler's character, a low level guy in a crime syndicate. It all goes pear shaped when Wayans tries to make an arrest based on info he's gotten out of Sandler while drinking and they get caught in a gunfight where Sandler accidentally shoots him. While Wayans is recovering, Sandler's character is caught and wants to turn federal witness in return for a reduced sentence, but he'll only come in if his old "buddy" is the one escorting him. Sandler's character is of course angry that his "friend" betrayed him and Wayans' character is of course angry that his "friend" shot him, but they're forced to work together, because the drug lord Sandler is testifying against (played by James Caan) has bribed both LAPD officers and federal agents to try and stop them from getting to court on the other side of the country. What makes this movie good is not so much all the action and stuff (which is still good, considering it's a relatively low budget 90's action-comedy), but the relationship between these two guys and how they play off of each other. They're really good together and it makes for some extremely funny moments throughout the movie. Think Glover and Gibson in Lethal Weapon, only goofier and with a grudge between them I think I'll go digging though my DVD collection now. I believe I have it lying around somewhere
