I not had too much of a problem with aqua plaining. I have a front wheel drive so a little more throttle and slight steer adjustment (and I mean slight) gets you out of it. Out of the road - yes! That's the major danger of aquaplaning. The driven wheels can spin free (more throttle can make the difference to make sure it will happen) and then the car is out of control. Any attempt to steer can make the car spin around and crash into things. Worst case is a tree coming into your car from the side squishing you out of the car like toothpaste.

Turns out someone made a boatmobile about twenty years ago, and made a how-to website. www.bobsokol.com/boatmobile/That just makes me want to build by own even more. There used to be a company in the UK which made Amphicars! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmphicarThe problem was that they had not enough customers so they had to close the factory. You can rent them in the UK and even in some places in Germany. Here's a clip from a neat German TV series about 4 car recycling brothers. When two of the brothers didn't wait for their little brother after renting an Amphicar, the little brother made himself an Amphibike…

The problem with Amphibious cars in UK was a matter of Launch points..... There isnt many places you can just roll down a landing strip into water.

There's actually an Amphicar for sale in Hamilton, for $30,000.
But I can guarentee that Boatmobile is not seaworthy, since it lacks a Duplex drive and the builder had to cut the hull in half to fit it to the chassis.

I honestly cant see the use for a cross-breed Boat car.... Unless you have a use for one.... And that must be a minority? The upside down aerodynamics of having a hull under your vehicle must do something awful to handling as a car, and having rigid rolling stock must be a drag in the water....

The problem with Amphibious cars in UK was a matter of Launch points..... There isnt many places you can just roll down a landing strip into water. That's the very same problem using a regular boat. Those are put to water by backing up a trailer into the water or using a crane. All options used for regular boats this size can be used for the amphicar as well. The problem is that it's neither a very good boat nor a very good car so either people couldn't afford it anyway or they simply bought a SUV, a regular boat and a trailer which was a lot more versatile and not that much more expensive.

I think it's mostly for asthetic purposes and to say he owns a Boatmoble (though it was built at least ten years before Spongebob, so it was probably based on the Tex Avery cartoon).

Of course you will always get the "Look at ME!!!" people who WANT strange looking cars?...
I went one further, I drive the strange looking Wagons, I drive the ones EVERYONE stops and has a look at.... not because I need to be famous, but because I can, and its fun...
Same effect, to be honest, except the money flows MY way when I am driving them?....
.....I am just a Mercenary aint I?.... ;D

I'm sure such a design could easily be made functional, since it's basically no different from the DUKW, Ford GPA and GAZ 46 (MAV). All it really lacks is waterproofing and a power take off shaft.
