so, this year in south korea. North and South Korea are entering as one team, (south) Korea already has a gold, and America is going string in women's cross country. I missed the opening ceremony and I don't know if Mrs TLW recorded it.

(by "going strong" I mean 5th place, which is the best finish an American has had.)

Time zone differences this year mean that little is being broadcast live in the US at a time I can watch.

The 17yr old snowboarder Red Gerard that stumbled in the first two rounds came back strong in the final round and won America's first gold.

I have an idea that probably wont make it past any olympic committee. Hows about you cross-thread each event.... Take a good figure skater and ask them to "try" the Downhill slalom.... Take a ski-jumper and strap them to a tin tray and try that "Skeleton" bob-sleigh run. And so on.
I would also like them to show a "side on" shot of the top of the downhill runs with an insert of a aligned spirit level so we can see just how bloody steep it is at the start... This I already know, because I have been to a ski resort that hosted a downhill race, and I looked at the start of the drop, and wondered if I would need a belay point to be able to abseil down that drop, because no bloody way was I trying that as a climb of any time without a safety rope?. Yep, I looked over the edge, yep I got Vertigo, yep I was "severely worried" about my mortality when someone suggested "We have a set of spare ski's, do you fancy a try out?.." There was no way they were throwing me over that edge without at least a parachute, or maybe a hang-glider, or maybe let me away from here as soon as possible in the general direction of away?.
I have rock climbed, I have Ice climbed, nothing scared me more than looking over the edge of a drop that people were going to throw themselves over and Slide down on two thin planks of wood.
I was there as a ride-along with a senior Mountain Rescue person who was there as an advisor before the event kicked off, I decided I would be useless on any slope that couldnt be walked up, as I am truly scared of ski's, because of their lack of brakes.
But I have had this "how would an average person look when compared to these super-athletes who compete?.. "

But I have had this "how would an average person look when compared to these super-athletes who compete?.. " a couple rounds ago, I came up with the idea of building one or two full-time "Olympic Village" facilities, where they will bring more or less everyday athletes (rule: you cannot have competed at any level above community amateur league) spend a week or two training them to be at the best of their game, and then let them compete against a set standard (or another team in competitive team sports) all televised with sponsors to fund the program. basically an olympics for those without the means to devote their entire youth to a sport.

there seem to be a lot of people who are putting in all-or-nothing efforts this year. a lot of falls in the snowboarding and in the figure skating. I'm not sure it is a good thing that the judging is focusing more on making it hard than on making it look easy. did see one cool trick in which a snowboarder (purposely) over-rotated a 360 and then reversed the spin to land it as a 360. I think they call it a "rewind"
I think I'd like to see a team snowboard event, too. throw the country's whole snowboard team on the slope at once, and judge the complexity of the run. (countries with less than three on the team could be combined to make up full teams)

one of our luge pilots was the first American to medal in luge. he took silver. one of our female snowboarders also took gold.
but the big headline is Kim Jong Un's sister invited the leader of South Korea to a summit.
