It's as though when the cell phone goes dark, to save screen and battery, the updating is halted?
The phone was on the charger, good internet connection, very slow internet speed, plenty of space in storage, and the phone was updating while I was watching it do so.
But, overnight, there was absolutely no further progress for any of the updates even though it was updating (slowly) when I turned in.
And, then in the morning, once I started working with the phone again, the updating started moving again! In fact, for the two hours I was doing things in the morning, the phone updated almost entirely. And, like I said, all night long as the phone lay unattended, the phone did NO updating whatsoever!?
Is it possible that background updates halt the moment the screen goes black?!
That makes no sense, since it's supposed to be background updating.
As it is, it's as though I have to be working with my phone, doing something very important, needing every last bit of the bandwidth in order for the phone to decide to screw me up and begin or continue updating.
Do I have to somehow leave the screen "lit up"? How do I do that?

Find the apps I want to update, get them started, and then press on to do other things... That's how I "told it" to update. Is that the way you do it, the light works?

Sounds basically the same as what I am doing, except I do not chose update all as that would include apps I never use, and apps not essential to the function of the phone. But, the problem of it choosing to stop working the update just because I'm no longer sitting there observing is still unexplained.

I wonder if there might be some hidden setting that keeps it in energy saving mode all the time. I know mine will stop all background functions at 15% battery.

Fully charged and on the charger. So if it's an energy-saving feature it isn't just for "battery low" conditions, apparently.
It seems like when the screen goes dark that triggers it to stop some how.
No idea how to track that one down, though.

Ah! Good! Figured out how to limit installing updates to my time frame and my liking... Or, did I???!! Google "Updating Play support libraries" and you'll discover that bunch can and will install when it wants to, no matter what you've selected with regard to updates. Arg!!!! support.google.com/googleplay/thread/13540649?hl=enWhat's worse is, again, my phone will only attack updates once I've gotten the phone back up from a black screen.
