We had this discussion when the board first opened for business. But given the time and the fact this took place in three or so posts I'm guessing that everyone either missed it the first time or have long since forgotten about it.
My stance on members advertising TC on other sites is simple; I have no problem with this being done, as long as the 'advertising' doesn't give the impression that TC is in any shape or form an official Mythbusters site (it isn't) or connected in anyway to Discovery Channel or Beyond Productions (again, it isn't).
TC is a privately owned and operated fan-board from which Mythbusters can take ideas if they so choose, and which they (or at least the production teams) are aware of. (Kind of hard to interview the shows producer without him becoming aware of the board)
My thinking on advertising is that it is often much better for members of that site to recommend them than for the Admin or Staff to do so. Members are much more likely to give (or be viewed as giving) a more honest opinion of a site as well as having a much better idea as to if members on the other site would be interested in TC or elements of it. Some people may like trying to come up with ideas, others how to test ideas and yet more may just want a place they can chat.
Members are also much more likely to be in a position to be able and willing to answer questions, rather than just posting 'come to this site' and never being seen again.
I've yet to read an advertisement by a Boards Admin that told me what that site was really like, or (being cynical) didn't leave me thinking 'well, of course that's what you'd say'.
Right now RL issues are not leaving me with the time needed to advertise TC as much as I'd like. And I think that such advertising is a good idea - we've been up long enough now to have found an 'identity', proven to be of some help to the show (I think) and that this isn't a 'fly by night' board.
Back when TC opened this wasn't the case, we had (and still have) a great group of members but nothing to convince people that the board would remain up and running for any length of time. Let alone anything that could show TC could take over some of the functions of the old MBFC and Discovery Boards in providing 'detailed' discussions and ideas for the show.
Now we have proven that the board is up and (hopefully) will continue to be up and running for a long time. Likewise we have evidence, if somewhat limited, to prove that Mythbusters is aware of the board and does pay some attention to it - or in other words that posting ideas here is not a total waste of time.
So if members are on other sites, their rules allow it, don't try to pass the board off as something it isn't and they have the inclination to do so please feel free to advertise TC elsewhere.
Thank you, Cybermortis
