Retro games become more and more popular, especially as Apps for smart phones and tablets.
Also steam has its share of classic games made compatible for modern systems.
There are the old LucasFilm Adventures like Maniac Mansion, Zak McKraken, Monkey Island, Loom and many more. There is a multi plattform interpreter available for free:
www.scummvm.org
You can even legally download 2 Adventures for free on this page.
Then there are the video console emulators. You can turn a Raspberry Pi into a Retrostation. The original RasPi even has an analouge TV-out and is capable to emulate the classic 4 to 16 bit consoles. There are plenty of good SNES games available, e.g. "Lost Vikings".
The Raspberry Pi 2 (the QUad core) can also emulate up to Nintendo 64 although not many games work well enough. The major issue is that the N64 came out before decent 3D graphic standards were invented. The conversion between the N64 graphics data and OpenGL for modern graphic cards is very tricky.
You can't do anything wrong by playing Zelda (at least SNES and above). Zelda and Zelda II (NES) are not bad but rather boring if you are not used to old video games. BAck then you admired the realistic graphics, something later generations can't understand.
And then there are the many games you can't recommend for children at all. BTW, I saw the "Postal" movie just yesterday. It's a movie based on the Postal² video game. Too bad this will never be available in the US. Because with the US censorship, you couldn't tell it apart from the emergency broadcast channel
