My Kids have started asking about Old Games, ... I dunno, perhaps its boredom.....
Ok, there was of course the classics, but beyond Packman, my Memory is a little Holy... no, I dont mean religious, I mean you could drive my works truck through some of the gaps....
Right, can we have nominations for the top 50 greatest games of all times around the turn of the century. As in, must be more than 10 years old.... I want to avoid latest craze games, I want games tried and tested and remembered as epic?... I would prefer to avoid if you can all Uber- Violent Call of Duty Halo beat-em-ups mass war games... I am looking for the non violent pass the time of day thinking games?... Maybe some mild violence.
I nominate the following... Elite. Tetris. Ghostbusters. Burnout Three, take-down... Need for Speed original.
a little help here?...
You can go MUCH older if you want.

Midwinter - one of the very first 'open world' games ever made.
Fallout and Fallout 2 (1997/8)
Baldur's Gate (1998) and Baldur's Gate 2 (2001) - both are now available as enhanced editions, and the first game is available for tablets.
Street Fighter 2.
Manic Miner
Wing Commander series. (The main series, not the privateer spin offs)
Civilization (The first two) Likewise the first two Sim City games. (These franchises are of course still being developed)

Lemmings Bombuzal Zany Golf I'd have to fire up my old, old computer and see what else I had. Lode Runner all of these are episodic sorts of games, rather than long term campaign games. there were also the AD&D Gold Box games

Gog might be a good place to point your kids at if they want to see some older games - you actually get several old games for free if you sign up and they occasionally have offers where you can get free or heavily discounted games.
Come to think on it I think quite a few of the games on the above lists are available (The Fallout games are no longer available alas). All the games are DRM free, so you can download them and then put them on another PC if you so choose.
The games on gog usually come with everything you need to play them on newer machines, along with patches etc. But having said that not everything is A; Worthwhile or B; Actually playable on newer PC's, some games have badly dated beyond just graphics.

Of course, there were the games I played as a kid (and teenager) No electricity required
Chess Checkers Chinese Checkers Monopoly Clue (many hours playing this one) Scrabble (I was really bad at it) Battleship Risk Sorry Dominos Chutes & Ladders (played this one with my kids) Mousetrap (really stupid)
And then the real action games Marbles Jacks
And let's not forget all the card games Poker, Black Jack, Crazy Eights, Rummy, etc. Solitaire (it was NOT invented by Microsoft)

I like the Close Combat games, A Bridge Too Far, Russian Front, Battle of the Bulge, and Invasion Normandy, but not the FPS First to Fight, the first ones where top, down squad based strategy games like similar to Board games like Panzer Leader and Squad Leader by Avalon Hill.
Rebelstar Raiders, that lead to Laser Squad and XCom eventually. Panzer General
Lots of other I like are already in the list.

none of the games listed so far are particularily racy/violent as such.
Gog.com has pegi ratings listed.
Btw, as a 6 year aniversary, gog is currently selling a lot of games for cheap, rotating titles on a daily basis

Leisure suit Larry is the only game series I can see listed that is 'adult' in content, although that may be pushing the use of 'adult' in terms of maturity. In that case it is down to the innuendo and occasional topless scenes rather than the language used in the games.
Doom and Quake might be considered more adult due to the blood and guts angle.
Much would depend on how old and mature your kids are. Doom, the more violent of the three/four games listed about might be a little to scary for kids under 12 (my cousin and I screamed like small children when playing Doom 2, opening a door and having a large demon jump out is kind of scary - and we were in our late teens at the time). The Larry games are probably not suitable for those under 15 (I think some of the earlier games are rated 18 the rest 15). But I'd say that any fairly mature 15 year old isn't going to get perverted by them - I think I was 15 when I first played them.

I burned many hours in the 90s on a conquest game called "Spaceward Ho" turns out there is a newer version available. www.deltatao.com/ho/ (I make no claims about the new version being as fun as the old version. I haven't played since my computer shelled to Windows from DOS)
