Well, I rummaged around in the garage today and found a piece of an truck mud flap, which I cleaned up and will use under my leather when I punch the holes with my punches.
The punches are hollow and punch a hole like a paper punch, so they have fairly thin walls, despite being hardened steel.
The rubber mud flap will act as a cushion to keep the punches from getting "boogered" up when I drive them through with the mallet. (hits the rubber instead of the work bench)

With leather, the way I learned it up at the blind center, Say you have to make 25 holes in a (evenly spaced) row, you lay down the rubber mat, then the leather on top of it, at the edge of the work bench. Clamp the leather and rubber mat to the bench top to prevent movement, mark the holes, then punch.

To make it even faster, we used a type of clamp similar to what I'll link, instead of C-clamps. www.plumbersurplus.com/Prod/Stanley-83-003-12-FatMax-Trigger-Clamp/128423/Cat/76

I normaly use an F or G (might be the same as a C) clamp for holding things together The F clamps don't like a lot of vibration so looks like I am heading to Bunnings (local hardware "super" store)

IIRC, I bought a whole side of 7?oz. when I bought some from Tandy, but it's been several years ago. Can't go wrong with Tandy, I've had really good luck with them in the past. I really liked Ghormleys site, he had some really good tutorials and even had instructions on how to get a black dye job that I'd never heard of before. Assuming Tandy follows the same general policy from store to store, if you want cheap leather, go downtown and fill out DBA (Doing business as) papers. They will give you pretty good discounts on already decent prices.
