Science behind this.....
Apparently "Stale" water is better. When you thump the top, the bottle accelerates, the water does not, which creates mini-vacuums between the water base and the glass at the bottom of the bottle.... You then have "Water Hammer" effects where the water catches up rather quickly with the bottom of the bottle and blows it out.
How true can it be?....
I just wish I could find reliable video....
oh.. try this.....

Nice catch SD. The only possible problem/concern would be some idiot getting hurt trying it at home, which I think is fairly minor in this specific case.
On the plus side it is something short and sweet, and which they could probably fully test and mess around with in an afternoon. Always a nice catch for the show methinks...a literal 'bottle show' myth.

However, I think its because I am not "Confident" enough to smak it hard like it was yer anvil type hard..... Its the thing about breaking glass. I dont like that. I tend to pull the punch right at the last moment, 'cos I hate breaking glass... It takes soooo long to find all the pieces when you break a glass behind the bar?... There is a mini-myth, if you break a glass and sweep it up, you will ALWAYS find a piece several days later.... Its a bit like odd socks, however hard you try, one always escapes if you wash them.?...

Before the internet was invented, we did that as a "neat trick" on the school playgrounds. This was before plastic bottles came up so every kid was equipped with disposable bottles for lunch. You can use a returnable bottle to hammer a nail into wood, but if you drop the nail into the bottle, it will take out the bottom of the bottle. The "fluid hammer" effect as shown in the video won't work with returnable bottles, they are meant to be tough in order to last numerous sales. You need those fragile disposable glass bottles but they became rare because of the inexpensive disposable plastic bottles. There are not many fragile disposable glass bottles around any more, the only ones I can find are for dairy products.

Did it as a teenager hundreds of times with bare hands. The entire school did that, the only ones who got hurt either stepped into the glass or was injured when picking the mess up.
