This came up on the old board occasionally. There is a part of the desert called Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California, that contained rocks that appeared to move by themselves, leaving trails in the dust. After decades of study, scientists recently discovered how they move--it's a rare weather condition. They even got lucky and were able to visually record the movements of the stones. www.vox.com/2014/8/28/6078799/sailing-stones-death-valleyand I'm going to be the stick in the mud and point out that I knew about this from reading National Geographic World magazine back in the 70s. they didn't have all the exact details because they didn't have the level of remote sensing equipment they have now - but they knew what was going on.
