This is a request from someone I know.
Or rather a bunch of us having an early morning blether on a loading bay...
If this has been done on the show already, I actually dont remember it?...
If so, can someone point me towards the right episode...
The myth is never use boiling water on the windscreen.
I know we have talked about it here before, some time back, maybe on the old boards, but did it ever get covered fully.
I know, its a simple one for the experienced amongst us, but perhaps not everyone knows.....
So how hot is hot.....
Warm water, hand hot, on thick ice, will shift the ice, as long as you are ready to shift the water away afterwards, as on really cold days it will re-freeze.
But boiling water....
But the bit on water getting into cracks, and "Exploding" the screen by thermal shock.
The request gores on...
We as drivers of HGV "Reefers" or refrigerated vehicles can easily supply some "Cold" to cool a screen down....
But getting a stock of windscreens to test?.. not easy.
Doers it matter which window.
One fitted to a side window that doesnt slide up or down, in a restricted gap, will the sudden expansion of the glass cause stresses.
Are side windows more susceptible to thermal shock....
Laminated windscreens are now law, but side windows?....
Older screen against new.
Used screens against new.Having small stone chips in the screen against unblemished.
And then, if you chuck a warm engine into full window defrost on the inside and chuck hot water on the outside, does that change anything.
For me, I will use a screen cover on my car.
At work, I usually have the engine running ASAP to warm up whilst I load.
Use of water on the screen, I usually will only use anti-freeze screen wash, as intended.
Nothing is so urgent I would chuck a basin full of hot water over any screen.... "Just in case"
If its that urgent, either you need an ambulance instead, or you need to re-plan your plans....
