As soon as you connect anything to the internet, either through hard wire, wi-fi or cell, it's like leaving a window open on your house for fresh air. Left unattended, you may get more than air entering (and leaving) that window.

www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/02/who-s-the-third-party-that-samsung-and-lg-smart-tvs-are-sharing-your-voice-data-with/index.htmSamsung. From what I can find out so far.... If you use your voice recognition to go search the internet, it "shares" your text search terms with Google. It also shares your voice with the firm that makes the voice recognition, in order to get a better translation, peoples accents, especially strog accents, are of great interest, in translations. Also, if you are searching for terrorist type activity, it sort of has a duty of care to report such to the authorities. Otherwise, over-reaction may be more than actual actions on this story... Yes it does share, but only where needed?... Or does someone know more than me here?.. which I dont doubt, I am just trying to sort truth from conspiracy theorists... which we all know can be a little confusing. However, for the concerned, this sort of explains a bit..... That is from the supplied link..... Extra to this, from what I can find out, they aint the only one. Its by knowing what people are searching for that helps provide a better product. Its also by knowing what they cant do that a lot of people ask for that also provides a list of "Maybe we should think of this" to development people.... I am told that the shouted "Mute" command is supplied to some sets to aid people who either dont want to hear adverts or want to hear personal conversations above the TV. I am also told that Advertising people are highly interested in the idea of getting customer feedback.... "Get ter (beep) with that" may be what you shout about products you cant believe are real because who the (beep) thought people want that kind of (beep) ... And those are terms I have heard in my own house.... Interest in people who see an advert say "I want one of that" and the TV automatically goes google on you to provide you with a link to the website?... Well, you see, its this kind of research..... But again, conspiracy and conspiring, it can cause headlines. like I've said - the government just wants to know if I am a threat to their jobs. business wants to know how they can extract my money from me. guess which one I'd prefer not to know what I am thinking.

Let me get my head around this..... www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-31157975So the suggestion that a Toaster can talk to a Fridge.... Why?.... Reading the article, I have decided NEVER to get a Internet enabled "White goods" thing. I know what is in my fridge, I dont need to check by phone, and just why the bloody hell my Toaster nedds an internet connection is perfectly beyond me. (Its not as if you would pre-load a toaster the night before and use internet to cook a 6 to 8 hr old dry piece of bread that has been sat in there all night, is it?..)

The toaster knows you like your toast buttered. So it checks with the fridge to make sure you have butter. If not, no need to waste the bread making toast.
The washing machine checks with the dishwasher to see if it needs hot water. If the dishwasher is using hot water, and the wash machine is using hot water, the wash machine knows there will not be enough hot water for your shower. It will hold off starting to wash to protect you from a cold shower.
But I, being the CT that I am, do not want my appliances talking behind my back. You don't know what they will come up with.

My washer and dishwasher are all cold water feed. So is my Shower.
Having the data of what is being used and when is to me an invasion of privacy.

Won't be long before your phone is flooded with targeted ads for detergents, soaps and various food items, based on how often your washing machine or dishwasher is running, how many people use the shower in a day and whether or not you have milk in your fridge.

Not if I dont get there first?.. I presume thee is a way of communicating "I dont want to be tracked", in the same way I have Ghostery that prevents Firefox being tracked.
And if not, I suspect I will be the first one here to find out, being that I have conversations with those who develop such software.....
If I do find out, I will let you all know. If someone else finds out before me, please please please jump in and let me know.... I am one who delights in passing such good news around......
However. I am aware that there may be a way of restricting communication between "Smart" devices to only authorised other devices, and they are investigating forcing HTTPS secure. Of course, that then depends on the other device being secure and having the right anti-nasty software.

Important Note for all those with Samsung Smart TV's.... You all know there has been concern about what is being recorded by the voice recognition software. Samsung have now rolled out a software update to "encode" anything recorded and sent back to Samsung research for better Voice Recognition software purposes, and are working on software to discount any other listening in data unless it has a trigger word to start the interactive bit.
If you have Samsung Smart TV's and want to use the voice control, or even if you have it switched off, you will be getting a top-of-the-screen notification soon that there is a software update.... Recommended that you update ASAP.
Samsung have promised to investigate these claims and consumer worries as soon as possible. There may be further updates to ensure your privacy is not neglected. Including maybe a promise "opt out" of using your voice recordings to better their research....
[edit, from my sources, this is being watched with interest by other smart TV companies, and "likewise" updates for all voice recognition software may be rolled out on all smart TV's soon.]

Yeah, I'm quite happy with not having to talk to my TV.
Actually, most of the time I turn it on for the sole purpose of not having to talk to ANYONE, so I won't be getting one of those.

I do tend to shout rude words at the tv.... Or rather at the people on the TV... I know its futile, but when some plonka starts up with some absolute load of boulders, it kind of escapes without a proper proof read?... Mostly politicians it has to be said.
For them, I have no care if they do know what I said. Perhaps a feedback of a "Bullshirt" button for all viewers on all politician speeches may make them start telling something closer to the truth.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31626055They aint selling so many?... Well, what a surprise... We all got one now. And because we have one, we dont want another? The initial rush to get one has ended. You aint gone and showed us the next big thing, the new ones dont do anything much different, we now have "smarts" phones, or mini-tablets, (some call em Ph-Ablets), that do the same, so why do we need a new one yet?.... Thinking I will replace my tablet every year "just because", well, thats stupid.

As I've said before, the tablet is a perfect example of a good idea that was rushed to market too quickly. They're not done.
Besides having a bigger screen than a smart phone, it really can't do anything that a phone can't. It's exactly the same software. Same OS, same apps, but (for some) without the added functionality of actually being able to make phone calls. I know, many of them have the option to put in a sim card, but how many people actually do that? Who wants a "phone" the size of a small TV?
The original idea behind the tablet was that it was supposed to be the replacement for the PC, but it can't do half of what a PC can. It can do what a phone can, but it doesn't fit in your pocket, so what's the point?

You want me to read whats on the screen?.. then give me something I can read.....
Whats the point?... Well, Whats the point in my Raspberry... Well, actually, I now have a small micro-micro computer that fits in my camera bag that can transfer images from my Camera to my Mobile hard drive, thus freeing up space on my camera memory, and as it connects to a TV, I can now just sit there and do some basic editing of my photographs as well, and then pass them to any Printer I want anything printed on, including putting them on an SD card or USB drive for use in other devices that dont have CF card connectivity. My newest upgrade is a small screen, so I can now do all of that without a TV.... Next I am working on s battery pack so I dont need a mains Plug either.
Small mobile devices have their uses.... its just what do you want them to be used for?.

A problem during a server update left many Samsung smart TVs looking not so smart this week. www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31642195Samsung, and I know its one of my favored companies, is "Working on it".... I have a problem, I am beginning to suspect they employed the junior programmer trained monkeys that used to work at AOL...
