this video in the funny pictures section reminded me of the old trope "it's safer to be thrown clear of the vehicle in a crash" the claim itself is wrong on so many levels, but is there a way Mythbusters could effectively demonstrate the wrongness of it?

Might want to note the number of dummies the vehicle runs over verses those 'thrown clear'.

even the ones thrown "clear" will get significant extra damage from hitting things

There are at least two that get rolled over. Here in frame 26, you can see the first dummy go under the suv. His legs are bent up at the knees. Attachment DeletedThen in frame 29, you see the second white dummy on the ground and he is soon rolled over. The two shown in the air are thrown clear. You can still make out the first dummy under the suv. Attachment Deleted

Looking further, there may actually be 3 or 4 dummies that are crushed. In frame 20, there is a dummy hanging out what looks like the driver's window that get's rolled over. This may be one of the dummies rolled over later after being totally ejected or it may be one that ends up being thrown clear. Attachment DeletedThen in frame 31, another dummy is seen coming out of the suv. You have to look closely at the left side of the car near the ground. This dummy is immediately run over just before the last white dummy on the ground is hit. This may be the same dummy hinging out the window in frame 20 Attachment Deleted

yeah, I wasn't sure whether it was more flying out or the same ones getting snagged by the car and recycled.

yeah, I wasn't sure whether it was more flying out or the same ones getting snagged by the car and recycled. Even going frame by frame and blowing the picture up quite a bit, it's still hard to see what's going on. I'm not sure what the frame rate is but there are 64 frames in about 6 seconds. That's only about 10 FPS. It may even be worse as it looks like it may be sped up a little. You could probably tell a little more from the actual video rather than an animated GIF.

Always ALWAYS wear a belt.... In modern cars they use the thing like "Safety cage" description of the "Passenger cell" safe bit of the car. Get thrown out of a car and all that safety is going to waste.
Motorcyclists use the phrase "Pick a soft spot in the scenery". Drop-it-and-roll is a common way of describing a situation, kick-and-slide, get off the bloody thing, throw me another.... Well, Yeah, up to half a ton of Bike is a heavy thing that hurts, so getting away from it is safer. But the subject here is Cars...
On the video... What I dont get is if the doors opened and the thing threw them out?.... Perhaps its different with that make, but in UK and europe, the doors have double-latch safety, that even if the door isnt shut properly, you can lock the doors with central locking. From what I believe, if it gets to the stage where Air-bags are being deployed, even in side impacts or roll overs like above, the central locking locks everything until the accident is "over" {Including belt pre-tensioners}
So did they exit by the windows then?... I presume they did. Defenestration, to give it its technical name.... (yeah, Look it up...) Its a common term in Scotland as an alternative to "Pick a windae" So why wasnt there toughened safety glass the doesnt just "Fly away" in an accident?....
I have many questions, as usual. And yes, I think this is a good test to be done, the myth is you wont get thrown out if you are inside, and the myth you dont need the belt is common in certain parts. Time to get it busted in the name of road safety......
Me?.. I always use the belt. I have seen side impacts many time, I have seen cars roll over, I have seen rally style cars roll many times, and I have seen spectacular "High side" rolls off a race track...(I think the most I saw was half a dozen live, and about 8-10 rolls on video) and the occupants walk away... 5pt harness roll cage HARMS and all the other safety stuff you get in a race prep car... No one is walking from the above posted video.
Being on a race track showed me why I dont want to be in an accident by stupidity.

Being on a race track showed me why I dont want to be in an accident by stupidity. the general philosophy at present is to make the side windows such that they won't turn into a flock of knives making their way through the car. it is going over to making them like the windshield - so they won't leave a hole. as you can imagine, fire crews have mixed feelings. we like being able to give the window a poke with a center punch and having it disappear into crumbles so we can stuff a skinny guy in with the patient while we decide how best to dismantle the car. ugliest accident I have seen to date: the driver came halfway out the window as the pickup rolled down the bank. we could see from 50 feet away he was dead.

If a video like that doesn't convince someone that being thrown clear isn't usually "better" likely nothing will change their opinion.

If a video like that doesn't convince someone that being thrown clear isn't usually "better" likely nothing will change their opinion. Unfortunately, "That will never happen to me" . And "well I am a good driver" Over confidence in their own ability is generally a precursor to taking a trip into the scenery.... I know I can be a bit of a bore at times on the subject of road safety, but, just when I thought I had seen it all, I get a days entertainment out of a new way to collect disability payments and a whole world of pain....

Dont give a pair of fetid dingo's kidneys who it "goes down well with", I expect a certain level of behavior from my "passengers". Fine warn me if I am being well out of order, or please dont hesitate if something is going to cause an accident that I may not have seen. I hereby admit I can be wrong "at times", so I aint being the big head here.... But criticize my driving?.. just for the hell of it?... They can walk. Importantly here, they have. Didnt complain twice......
