Just because a signal has some type of mathematical pattern to it doesn't mean it's not the result of some natural phenomena. Most naturally radiating objects in space have some type of mathematical signature. While this one may be a little stranger than most, I doubt it's ET. Probably just two or more different sources in the same area of space causing interference with one another and what we are receiving is that interference pattern.

For me, the first question is where is it really coming from? Is it local or extra stellar? The problem with it being such a short signal is that by the time you realize it is there, it's over and too late to get someone else to triangulate in on it. Given the power and broadband nature of the signal, a unknown spy or other satellite is most likely.

interesting. I'm not going to speculate, but I will be interested in the progress.

A Spinning object that is rotating at 187.5 (what?.. I dont know, maybe mph, maybe cycles per second?..) and is emitting radio frequency bursts of high power. Hmm... spinning things... like the universe isnt full of them.... Rule 39, there is no such thing as a coincidence (Gibbs NCIS) [ www.ncisfanwiki.com/page/NCIS%3A+Gibbs%27+Rules ] I suspect a spinning pulsar right now. However....I have not made sense of the data just yet. Perhaps it may be too complex for my own mind to understand, but right now, I have several ideas to help me?... The fact that there are "errors" in the findings..... well, no one is perfect are they.

187.5 is not a frequency. It's a number indicating the dispersion of the signals. Multiple signals all integral multiples of 187.5 does indeed seem strange.

Maybe some kind of gas layer acting like a galactic saw comb filter interfering with the RF output of a wide band pulsar. It will be interesting to see if that 187.5 number drifts over time.

It might as well be 42. 1 is not unique. 1 pint is 20floz, so its not one. 187.5 might be "1" of something else. We just dont know.... Yet?

Yeah, I was about to say that applying meaning to it by use of our number system is ignorant at best. 1 is only 1 because we've agreed on that here on Earth. An extraterrestrial intelligence might as well call our "one" something like "sphlagurken" and instead of it being the first natural number, as it is in our counting system, it might be their 389. Depends on where they've agreed to start.
While math is certainly the language of the universe, if there's intelligent life somewhere else out there, ours is just as certain not to be the only way there is to write it down. Considering how many different written languages we have here on Earth, ET's will surely be as foreign to us as Japanese is to an Arab.

I still don't get the 187.5 connection. Microwaves operate at 2.450 GHz. (12cm wavelength) I can see the extremely short burst happening when the door is opened while the oven is still operating.

Pretty sure these are two separate and different signals.

Pretty sure these are two separate and different signals. Exactly. The ones they're talking about that are caused by microwave ovens are called perytons, but the signals we were orignally discussing in this thread are called fast radio bursts. They're not related.

Got it now. I was assuming with the timing of this story with the 187.5 story that is was a sort of retraction. So the microwave perytons were not in the calculation to get the 187.5 figure and that applies only to the 11 recorded FRBs.

..... Ah... erm..... nope..... Can someone 'splain that, 'cos me here is getting a senior moment.... The two are NOT related in any way, yet, one is responsible for the other?... Or not?
