Additional to the generic warning this experiment requires the use of basic hand tools and an electric drill the work should be held by a clamp not by hand and safety glasses should be worn.
This experiment requires a glass jar with a plastic lid a 1/4" by 2" brass machine screw with three nuts and an aluminum foil strip 10mm by 50mm. Further a non conductive rod like a piece of pvc conduit and a nylon/ artificial fiber rag.
Assembly of the experiment takes "5 minutes" ;D With safety glasses on and the lid of the jar clamped, drill a 1/4" hole in the center of the lid. Fit the screw through the lid take one of the nuts and wind it on the screw and tighten to secure the screw to the lid. Take the second nut and wind it on just far enough to fit the third nut on. take the strip of aluminum foil and place the center over the screw, wind the third nut on until it is firm. Gently fold the aluminum foil down (away from the lid foil) it will tear easily. with the foil arranged so that the two halves are touching replace the lid and tighten.
Arrange the jar so you can see the edge of the foils ie side on, take your rag and vigorously rub it up and down the piece of conduit then touch it to the head of the screw note what happens with the two sections of aluminum foil. Take the rod away note the action of the foil, recharge it by rubbing and repeat. "Why is it so"?
Sometime in the dark ages I saw this experiment done it involved a vacuum jar and gold foil.
