It is pretty well documented that the chinese developed gunpowder, and popular media implies that much of their early gunpowder fun was based on rocketry rather than guns. however, would this be affected by bamboo being a natural rocket engine casing?
IS bamboo a natural rocket casing? would taking a joint of bamboo, drilling a hole in the end, and filling it with gunpowder make a functioning rocket?

As a form of firework display, yes, I can see the point. What would be a military use for such?.

The military use would be to scare the hell out of opposing troops, as well as probably creating a smoke screen.

putting a high rate powder in the next joint up, with a touchhole between joints and the upper end capped would make it an explosive rocket. - or just putting a point on it would make it a fire arrow, as in the Hwacha and the chinese multistrike missile myths.
