There is a German movie from 1985 where someone invents a machine which allows you to "enter" any VHS movie running in the attached VHS recorder. With his roomie, a novelist and fuel station attendant, they try out various famous movies and try to keep the machine a secret from the Japaneese home entertainment company in RL which had found out its existence by accident. For example they had checked out Indiana Jones: Caught by Nazis during Transport, they made up a dice game called "One is out". Who gets the least number "is out" and needs to jump out. The character you become is random which can be a serious problem, especially if the tape starts playing in the middle of the movie: And they had learned the hard way that you should never use a random tape with a blank label! So what would you do with the machine?Attending cool parties? Or have a special dinner in a themed restaurant for free? So what movies would you enter and what would you do?

I would enter back to the future, or one of the other time travel movies. I would love to go back in time and meet my grandfather, who died six years before I was born. Everything I have heard about him seems to indicate he was a fascinating person and I would love to have known him.

Everything I have heard about him seems to indicate he was a fascinating person and I would love to have known him. This is not how it works. you are inside the movie and "stuck" in the fictional world of the VHS cassette until you leave. It might be possible to enter a home made video from the old time but you don't meet the original actors, you are inside the plot of the story. And by the way, the remote to get back out needs to recharge about 8 minutes which was the problem with the scene with the gallows and when they entered a taped boxing match by accident.

I'll have to cancel my order for one. No VHS when he was alive. In fact, no home movies of any kind. All I have are photos.

It is an interesting premise. I'd definitely want to be previewing tapes before I stuck them in that machine. truth is, I wouldn't really trust my luck enough that I'd put in a Star Trek tape and not find myself wearing a red shirt.
I think I'd be inclined to stick to things like travelogues.

I am thinking I may have to review something of great value.... like be there at the end of the Italian job and take over control of that coach and not drive like a lunatic?...
Or grab a recent one of say the last 12 months and go drop a LARGE wad of dosh on Leicester City to win the premier league at 500-1 odds. Or better.
Otherwise, I wouldnt want to go into any work of fiction. I would use it as a quick travel thing to go see things that have now changed from the point of view of how they were before change... Perhaps even go back and encourage preservation work on some of the important species of animal that have become extinct. Or go back and "Hug" certain people of notoriety and let them know exactly how appreciated they really are.

Then whats the use in doing it at all?... You can watch the video from "inside"?.. all your going to see is the camera crew, and work out that all you see in the video, half of it is "scenery" put in by the film crew?... that building back there is two foot wide, and being held in place by a crane?...

Here is a clip of their first entry:
"Now this went really well!" "Nah, don't complain!" "All you do is inventing crap!"
