Especially since all car manufacturers do it because you can't build a diesel car which complies with current emission standards AND any customer would like. The solution by our politics is making the emission standards much harder to comply... Yes, VW was caught first - but they still made the least polluting diesel engines. That's why everybody used to classic diesel engines think that the VW ones don't behave like a real diesel.

This is going to explode. Over here, a member of my family, just picked up a VW Golf "R" something top of the range when new performance package, for less than a standard no frill VW golf, three month old "never used much" less than 1,000 mile on the clock, basically a demonstrator that had never been "ragged" as the garage that used it were "Responsible people"?/... and if you believe all that, well... But reason for sale was there is a "New New" one out, and they need to shift the old - new- one to make space?. But it comes with full Manufacturers warranty, full garage-that-sold-it warranty for 3 yrs, no dents scratches or anything, and its in excellent condition. Dont care what the actual emissions are, the package on its own is "excellent" Aside from that, the european govt Knew for years that VW had been cheating..... But as they are italian AUDI division, and contribute towards the running of europe by BIG tax payments [and some [allegedly] in brown envelopes no doubt], they were given a "pass"?... And again why Brexit. UK "plays by the rules", well, most of the time, we as a country excel in playing by the rules, and yet, other countries?.. ALL of Audi, VW, and the europen department that deals with such, are liable for "something" by allowing this to go on. Meanwhile, the "not cheating" emissions are pretty good anyway, maybe not in the upper range of "Almost fresh air" low emissions, but up there anyway?.. So as the prices fall, if you can get three years hassle free motoring, why not?. VW are pretty reliable, I suspect you may get up to 10 yrs of safely driven hassle free motoring if you look after the vehicle. And by then, the resale value is not what your bothered about. So cash in on cheep cars and be prepared to be maybe in a slightly higher tax band... is that worth the saving on the car?.. maybe yes, because even when NOT cheating, VW make cleaner cars than some other brands.

VW are pretty reliable, I suspect you may get up to 10 yrs of safely driven hassle free motoring if you look after the vehicle. Sadly, nobody makes long lasting engines any more. There are many reasons why modern engines can't last as long (in time and miles) as classic ones: 1. Many "fragile" sensors and actuators. Something will break eventually and every time the costs for the spares and the labor are very high. And while the car industry tries to stock spares for at least 10 years, when something is likely to break, they don't bother to make more spares after 6 years or even sooner. There is no way that modern cars can become classic cars unless you manage to replicate spares. When the ECUs stop working, you need to create new ones from scratch when they become unavailable. 2. Modern cars use plastic parts in critical spots. It is amazing how many modern radiators blow and entire cars catch fire nowadays. 3. Modern cars have a lot of gaskets in hard to reach spots. The engine will start to spill oil like a fountain eventually and fixing costs a fortune. With an oily engine, you can't pass MOT (or other checks). 4. Non-standardized parts. In the good old days, you could buy spark plugs, fanbelts, filters and other essentials anywhere, even at night at fuel stations. Nowadays you need to order the spare parts in advance to keep your car running.

of course, that said, when our 25 year old minivan has a major breakdown, we will probably consider it not worth repairing. the unibody is getting worn out. My dad's VW Golf-3 still has a classic durable engine block and not that much actuators and stuff so the engine runs still very well but since the engine is literally wrapped in manifolds and other modern junk, you just can't disassemble it to get to the gaskets without breaking a lot of fragile stuff and paying a fortune in labor and replacement pats. I had spent €3500 to fix the rust problems 5 years ago and just wipe the engine clean every 2 years before pushing the thing through the TÜV (MOT). I could have used the money to buy up to 3 cars like mine but my dad is used to his car and likes it. And since he only uses the car to go shopping or see a doctor the oil leaks are not too inconvenient. My 27 years old car doesn't leak any oil at all. After a small modification to the crankcase venting system I had invented for my last one it doesn't seem to use any oil at all. After 12 months and 30,000 km the oil is still near maximum. With the original vent system, this engine is known to use up ~200ml per 1000km. I just had replaced all seals (the few this engine has) while replacing the clutch.

Moving this question here from other threads... "Updates" If you own a vehicle that has been "Updated", does it cease to be original?.. and how badly?.. Taken from another thread... First thing you do with the Ford Escort Mk 1/2/3/ was to remove the awful standard radio and plug in a "Pioneer" or "Blaupunkt" instead that at least had stereo.... Cavalier mk1 and "cd" version came with standard twin down-draught webber, but [deleted] awful air filter, so pop that off and put on K&N air filter with the washable metal screen that allowed a better air flow. Not ONE of the cars/trucks/buses/BIG wagons I have ever owned or driven, including new vehicles I have driven, has been fully "Factory original" within six months of owning it, be that change of tyres, change of oil for something better than the 10w40 "soup" they provide as cheap standard, new brake linings, replacement clutches [buses go through one a year at least being they stop at every lamp post?..] and the like, so how can they say that anything restored is "Factory original" condition?. Twit purist I am arguing with, has restored a vehicle, to what he calls concourse condition. His problem with me is I know who did the paint job. BOTH front wings are replaced, most of the floor, parts of the roof, doors have been trimmed and replaced at the bottom, it almost all new glass all round, .... Hang on a moment whilst I review things here... Right.. Yes I believe the Firewall between the engine and the passenger compartment is all original... Every Other panel has either been replaced or repaired where a good part of it has had the great red metal rot in it. He has the cheek to call that "Factory original"? "Concourse condition"?... "As good as new" even is a stretch of the imagination. There isnt enough original metalwork on there to make a soap box?. This is the whole point, to make a vehicle drivable, you HAVE to make changes, and update certain parts that have either rusted away or were a bloody bad idea in the first place, such as a mix of Cross-Ply and Radials on the same car. Its known and illegal to mix them on the same axle, has been for a while, but some cars were supplied with cross-ply rear to get grip and radial front. Now of course with better tyres, almost everything on the road is radial.. its a better tyre all round... Also tyres have grown in width. Escort Mk 1, extremely thin tyres as supplied, most sensible people put a wider tyre on straight away.... The law states that you MUST have seat belts in every vehicle supplied today. There has been resistance from these "antique" pillocks for many years that the law should not force "Retrofit" of clip-on seat belts.... Me, as a road safety campaigner, even if you vehicle is limited to maybe 30mph tops, am concerned about all the other [del]holes on the road turning your vehicle into a roadside ornament, and therefore, would ask that you get sensible and fit belts. No it aint original, but it will save your life.... If you want to "Show" the vehicle, take them off and stow them in the boot. Just DO NOT drive them. Or face a law that will prevent those vehicles being used on modern public roads. On that score, I am also aware of a Minimum stopping distance being enforced. Thankfully, all HGV's I know, will manage the distance that would be enforced on them, "As long as all brakes are in order". Cars?.. there is often talk of the stopping distance mentioned in that book of sensible the Highway Code, and talk of the fact that all of todays modern cars are quite capable of stopping in half that distance. Even in the wet. The suggestion is that they should start at that distance mentioned in the highway code and outlaw anything that cant stop that fast... Trucks?.. light load can out-brake an average car. We have MASSIVE brakes to deal with steep hills and heavy loads?. Maybe a little longer for heavy load, but mostly within that highway code recommendation for Cars even?. Antique cars?. May I remind you where balls bounce little children follow. How would it be that in the enjoyment of your "All original" vehicle you kill a young kid who thought you would stop?. Just when do we decide that as they fail modern road safety tests, these old vehicles are indeed unsafe for any measure on the roads?. Unless they are updated. Restore and show, by all means, dont wanna' spoil that, but trailer them, DO NOT drive on public roads. As for owning a classic vehicle that is roadworthy, for me, if its a bolt on part that improves safety, I am all for it. The tres I am running at the moment are anything BUT "Economy" and provide the best grip budget can afford, higher rolling resistance, yes, maybe, but after a sudden sheep of a kid jumped off the pavement with his bike and disappeared under my bonnet a few months back, how the hell I didnt hit him I will never know, at UNDER 20 mph as well, I want tyres that will allow my ABS to work at its best?.. I do know of a owner of an older Mk3 ford escort who has "Frankensteined" the sensors and electronics for a modern Air Bag into his vehicle.. but he knows what he is doing, he is an electrical engineer from automotive industry, who just happens too own a pristine MK 3 Escort, and its an absolute joy to drive, as it has "All Modern" running gear and traction control from later models underneath... "Because he can". It also goes like stink... I wont say where he got the engine, but it approx twice the HP of original. But it looks, from the outside, to be all original...."sleeper" as they call it.... Will he annoy the purists?. Hell Yeah....

Addition to the above post and discussion. I have made "Modifications" to the car I drive. On one car I drove, the brake cylinder as supplied by the factory was bloody awful, so it was "Upgraded" to a bigger master cylinder, the improvement in barking was not just noticeable but by a long chalk did it improve the handling.
My Current car, I have been in the process of swapping out all the awful "lucas" type bulbs for LED replacements, that are not only brighter but a bigger glow so can be seen from further away. They are a hell of a lot better than the factory original... A Lot more glow for less power as well, and much longer lasting. I was blowing a bulb approx once a month with the various indicator brake headlight etc all round, I aint had to replace one of the LED's yet in the three years I have been doing the gradual replacement. I only replace when one has blown.. but I do both if its a pairing, like both the brake lights rear, both side lights front etc.
I HAVE replaced the dash lights for LED.
How much have I taken out of thecar ever reaching "Classic" status?.
If this vehicle was to ever be restored in the future, do you think they would take out all LED and replace them for "Original"?..
I have also upgraded the mats... and I have replaced the mechanism that holds the spare wheel in place for one thats secure but doesnt take half an hour to unwind the nut that holds it there. The exhaust has been upgraded to a "proper stainless" steel system that I was assured would last the rest of the life of the vehicle.. Its not factory condition now is it?.. what is on there is a hell of a lot better than the rust magnet they used to supply.
This is a living breathing machine that is evolving... How much has it ceased to be "All original", and, in the general scheme of things, does it matter?.
I am asking for discussion on how much it matters that you do Upgrades of any type to a vehicle, should you do those upgrades, and are you happy with them. From a general person not a concourse snob point of view... Because I believe this subject is not usually addressed because it just doesnt bloody well matter, we all "Upgrade" out tin-toys-for-grown-up-boys-and-girls as we have them to drive rather than be a piece of lawn art?..
And I am asking because I need to ask sensible people, not the polarised two sides of the room me and the sensible against the twit purist and his mate "discussion" we have been having on the subject elsewhere. Am I right in being polarised in such a way that my suggestion of fitting seat belts to an older vehicle that came originally without?.. because todays roads are busier and safety matters?..

to try to distill it all down to one simple concept. the idea of "keep it original" which to the definition I have been told, means only use parts that were available when the car was made, or constructed to match, exactly, parts that were available when the car was made in the case of things like tires - though if a person has, say, a model T that is so well preserved the original tires still hold air; then he is considered to have hit the jackpot. which means that if the first thing Escort Mk1 owners did when they bought the car was to change out the air filter, then you can change out your air filter to the same kind they changed it out to, and still call it original condition. the next grading is to keep it looking original, which allows people to use radial tires made to look like original tires, and the retrofit seatbelts, modern hoses in the engine, better quality brakes, etc.
beyond that, it sort of tends to be an anything goes type of deal, and people will either like what you did or not according to their individual tastes.

Transport issues. I was "Out" yesterday doing some serious "Shopping" with the Missus and Kids. There are several things we need to get done, start by dropping a boot-full off at the dump of stuff too big to go in normal trash, and then on, to get things like a coat and Boots for winter because the ones from last winter no longer fits the growing kid, other kids wants now shoes as well, we need something to fix something, and from the other side of town there is something we need to look at for future plans?..
Note the date... "September", still three months from Xmas?.
So why do I get the impression everyone is in Xmas shopping mode already and driving like a cod-liver-oil-fuelled-fully-feathered-twerp-of-the-highest-order?.. Its a case of scald me in boiling oxygen I am going to get at least one car ahead in the minds of some of these twits, I have a car six inch from my bumper at a set of lights tapping the throttle like he is going to drag race away from the lights, except, well, he got "me" in front, in full, belligerent, who-da-duck-do-you-fink-you-is mode who is not going to accelerate like a loon, and he cant get through me?. We set off, and he remains a few inches closer than is even sensible in an emergency from my back bumper. I start to slow down for the next set that is "DEFINITELY" on read already, and I gets a horn and two fingered salute. We stop... I get out.... Two kids over 6ft get out as well... Not a word was spoken, we just stand and look at her questioningly?.. She looks terrified?. I take a photograph of her, point also to the rear mounted camera on the parcel shelf, and we get back in the car... I have no idea what happened next behind me, but I never saw that car again?.
Three mile and two shops later, we get to a roundabout, and the HUGE SUV on the inside lane of a laned roundabout decides to change lands to the one I am in, whilst I am alongside him, with a truck close behind me.... You do NOT "Force" a gap like that.... The wife is terrified, naturally, as its her side that he is on, I have nowhere to go, and the truck behind me has a loud horn?. We are moving slowly towards the exit of the roundabout that the twit is trying to push past the exit his lane was supposed to go off at to get to, and we again get "Close", the truck behind me is making sure there is no gaps. We stop because of traffic... I lower the passenger window, he lowers his, maybe he wants to say something?.. I dont let him, I turn the dash cam to his direction, and say "Smile sweet for the camera now?..." I raise the window, and because we have a good view for quite a distance, I keep an eye on him. I see three vehicles behind the truck take that exit before I loose sight of him.
Then we get to a set of Motorway bits. I set off at good pace and am keeping a good gap between me and the car in front... Its a set of Roadworks with "Average speed" speed camera's, and the limit is set to 50. I am in the inside lane keeping a good pace at just over approx 49.5mph?.. A series of trucks hammer past at speed... And by speed, I mean speed speed... Like maybe doing 65ish to 70 speed... So whats happened to speed limiters on all HGV's to stop them doing more than 55?.
I note numberplates... "Ducking Foreigners"
I must at this point refer to an accident "Recently" on the M1 between two wagons and a Minibus?.. It was noted at that time he was a foreign natural resident in UK. He was driving DRUNK. "I just found out", the licence he had, restricts him to VAN size LGV 3ton maximum, he did not have the licence for the vehicle he was driving.
If I am not against foreigners driving on UK roads, why am I building up such a case against them, that its getting noted that most of the Ijurts on the roads driving dangerous are NOT UK nationals?..
Anyways, I will let the Police deal with the speed camera results of their plates not just exceeding the speed set on that road, but exceeding the speed set for that vehicle. ANPR allows this to be done in real time, in that they can be detained at any time from immediately as they pass that camera to a certain time in the future, typically no more than 14 days. Or be fined as they leave the country through any port. "I hear through the grapevine" that there is strong movement that such vehicles that have foreign plates and are seen to be exceeding legal speed limit requirements by engine restrictions and limiters will be refused entry next time they try to enter the country. Until they can prove they are roadworthy. To UK standards. Which will require an "Extensive" Ministry Of Transport Roadworthy test.... "Bring it on"
Last serious issue is with a woman driver who just didnt have a pot-of-glueclue about what she was doing, and tried to drive the wrong way around a roundabout?.. The car in front screeched to a halt as she tried to enter the roundabout "The wrong way". I duuno, perhaps she didnt have a reverse gear inside her handbag or something, but, no one was moving at all. "Eventually" we hear a siren, and the Cops appear... she is escorted from the vehicle and put in the police car whilst the second copper drives her car to "Somewhere safe", as it wasnt ion the direction we were going, I have no idea?. Perhaps that possibly octogenarian had missed her medication this morning, perhaps she had had one too many sherries, perhaps she had wandere3d away from her usual roads and was following a sat-nag, ... But this raises the question, And I will include me in this. Shouldn't there be a more stringent proof of ability to continue driving for people above a certain age?.
Lastly, Sat Nag. I will fail a modern test. Part of the "New" UK and european requirement for testing, is that you show ability to use Sat Nag to navigate?. I am ducking out of that one... I have maps. I Use maps. I DO NOT WANT sat-nag.
As part of a later journey, with just One kid, we tried to see what would happen. We set a start point and a destination point, and let sat-nag "direct" us?.. It spent more time saying "You are on the wrong road turn around now" and "Recalculating" when I ignored it and continued on than it did giving actual correct directions. Local knowledge... trying to use the East Lancs road at that time of say is suicide. I know back roads that take you around the holdups, and I used them.
There is the problem, Sat Nag, even with a new addition of real-time traffic reports, are useless when you know where you are going?..
And you are going to have to take me a few hundred mile to find a city I dont have a working knowledge of how to get arund the place there.
So without me throwing it "Pick a windae" style, how would I take a test with a sat nag?.

You call them runabouts, I call them freeforalls. Especially the large double lane ones. They should have a warning sign posted just before entering one. WARNING - All driving rules suspended next 1/8 mile. You get stuck in that inside lane, you may never get out.

We have a few of them painted on ones around here. It pains me to see the trouble people go to "Drive round" a bit of paint thats smaller than their actual car?. Of course, I have a "Special licence", as in, its older and more experienced, and due to my Driving instructor back from the old days of learning Bus, when questioned how you get a double deck 78set Bus around "One of them", his reply was "Its just a bit of paint". You adhere to the rules of giving way to the right, or left, dependant on which knee your gearstick is on, then just pick a direction and aim for it.
There is also a wide one with a gigantic flower pot and rock garden of a central reservation, with no lane dividers on the thing at all, that if you wanted to, is a straight line for the traffic between entering and exit, if your going straight ahead. And yes I do. I dont see why it "Puzzles" the other drivers, why they think that those on the inside are turning right, and those on the outside are going straight ahead by driving in a HUGE circle to get there?. TBH, to get a 60ft wagon to turn right there, you have to hog the left outside of that, with the cab, to get the trailer around it, so perhaps I am doing it right anyway?. You should just put the indicators on to inform other traffic you are taking the next possible exit and then take it at your own pace. Yes they are confusing to those who aint used to them, but, once you are, its easy.

(it is between three parking lots) the other is literally a standard four-way stop, where they cut out a circle in the middle and planted things.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-41408195Make your own mind up. I do however predict chaos for a short period, as MILLIONS of women start asking for lessons to drive?. Not sexist, this is just a reflection of allowing "half" the population access to vehicles there were previously prohibited from, there will be a lot of new learners on the roads for a while. That many new road users in one country has to be a problem, and onwards to multi-car ownership, there will be a small explosion in car ownership for all the new drivers. I do however have a question... Driving licences. Will the photo-id be allowed in "Post box" format?.. only showing the eyes?. How the hell do you expect to be able to identify the driver in say a red light camera if you cannot see who the driver is?. This is a question being asked on UK forums at the moment, and its a small problem, Identity, this is not a racist matter, but, if I am not allowed inside a bank with a crash helmet or heavens to betsy with a balaclava, or even a hat and scarf over my chin if its really cold in the cold weather, how can you verify that if you allow Burqa type "Eyes only" headdress?. There are certain places where identity matters. If this is racist, to you, than thats your problem. I refuse to answer any racist attacks on this, as this is an identity problem for all races, on the grounds of level playing field. All I am asking is how do you "Photographically" identify someone if they refuse to be identified?. Especially if their identity matters. You are free to live your lives however you want, except, if I have to prove identity with a photograph ID, I will refuse to allow anyone else to short-cut that process. If I should be at a gate that stops and identifies people, such as a security gate on an airfield, I will not allow passage to anyone who I cannot identify. This is a security matter, how do you answer that one?. Especially if the answer is "Retinal scans" that would bring up your true identity including a required photograph of your face on the file?.. But in all, this is to be seen as a positive step towards sexual equality world wide. I say a massive yes to this ruling, and I hope it is the start of better laws for them all.

I say a massive yes to this ruling, and I hope it is the start of better laws for them all. yes, there will be "new driver" chaos for a time. and your license photo question is even better since one widescreen video format is known as "letterbox" but it is quite likely that most women who wear the full coverings will still not be allowed to drive by their husbands.

Right to drive and photo ID are totally different topics. First give the the right to drive and they will work out the driver's license optics.
