Last night I made a small contribution to our collective dictionary of derogatory terms (or at least I thought I did, until ponytail61 found out someone else had beat me to it) and that got me thinking. We’re a creative bunch here and making up new words and terms to describe the world around us is something we might all be good at and have already done to some extent, so I propose a little game. Let’s expand the dictionary The rules are pretty loose. The criteria for entry are as follows: - You can enter single words that are either completely original, mashups of two or more existing words, multiple word terms (like “special snowflake”) or even acronyms. The only requirement is that it has to be relatively easily to pronounce. Yes, that goes for acronyms as well (“FUBAR”, “ASAP” and “RADAR” are good examples). - Do your best to define it and give examples of the usage you intend for it, but don’t be surprised if it takes on a life of its own because someone else thinks it can be better used in a different way. Language is fluent. It’s created by the people who speak it. If a word is pretty much self-explanatory, don’t expend too much energy on coming up with a brilliant definition for it. The more intuitive it is, the more likely it is to catch on. - You should check (as well as you can – failure is always an option, as ponytail61 demonstrated with the word I made up) that the word, term or acronym you’ve come up with doesn’t already exist, or at least isn’t already used in the way you’re proposing. - Existing foreign words are welcome, as long as they can be pronounced by English speakers. English is a language that often borrows from others. A word like “schadenfreude” for instance was adopted directly from German because there was no existing word in English that meant the same thing. As far as I know, there still isn’t. If it can fill a linguistic gap, or if it just sounds cooler than its existing English equivalent, go for it. - Last, but not least, normal board rules apply as always. By the way, feel free to make requests. If you think there’s a thing, term, phenomenon or whatever that needs its own word, term or acronym, describe it to the rest of us and let’s see what we can come up with. Most importantly of all, let’s have some fun with this

This post will contain a dictionary-like list of all the words and definitions for them that we come up with during the course of this thread. The idea is to collect them all in one place, so you don't have to sift through page after page to find the word you're looking for when you need it. It also makes it easy to refer to when one of the less known words are used in conversation elsewhere on the board, which will hopefully help with proliferation. As we all know, words live or die based on how much they're used.
So, without further ado, todo, howdo and doggie doo, I present to you the Citadel Dictionary:
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moronosity
Noun
Definition: While "stupidity" is used to describe the quality or state of simply being stupid, "moronosity" is meant to describe the quality or state of being stupid while actually believing you're being smarter than and/or morally superior to someone else.
Example: His assertion that saying "Merry Christmas" to someone who isn't a Christian is to be considered offensive on the grounds that it constitutes a form of religious oppression was a display of complete moronosity, as there usually is no malicious religious intent at all behind those words. It's about as offensive as saying "have a nice day" to someone who would rather be awake during the night.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Offensensitive/Offensitive (the jury is still out on which is better, so for the time being, both are accepted)
Adjective
Definition: Possessing an overwhelming desire to take offense
Example: If you think it's automatically racist to wear a sombrero when you're not Mexican, you're just being offensensitive/offensitive.
Can also be used as a noun: Offensensitivity/Offensitivity
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Affluenza
Noun
Definition: A condition where children of rich people believe rules and laws don't apply to them and they will be protected against consequences of their actions because of their wealth.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Truthiness (Apparently coined in its present form by comedian Stephen Colbert)
Noun
Definition: A quality characterizing a "truth" that a person making an argument or assertion claims to know intuitively "from the gut" or because it "feels right" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Murdocked
Verb
Definition: Being led by media sources to believe something that isn't true.
Example: If you believe that article about the MMR vaccine causing autism, you've been thoroughly Murdocked!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Beelzebug
Noun
Definition: Satan in the form of a mosquito (or other flying insect) that enters your room at 3 am & despite all efforts can not be cast out.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nosefly
Noun
Definition:
1. Any insect that wishes to hover about a foot in front of your face, or even closer (closely related to Beelzebug).
2. Any vehicle that overtakes and then sits a couple of feet from your front bumper because they just don't want to be behind you.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Madeupium (pronounced: made-up-ium)
Noun
Definition: A fictional substance sarcastically referred to when you believe something to be fake.
Example: A commercial for a women's facial cream, promising things that sound too good to even be remotely true is shown on television and someone sarcastically comments, "Yeah, and I bet the secret ingredient is Madeupium."
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Pretusional
Adjective
Definition: A mashup of the words "pretentious" and "delusional", pretusional describes being more pretentious than could ever be justified. An extreme state of assuming status you don't actually have, but believing very strongly and sincerely that you do.
Also known as being supertentious (super pretentious) or hypertentious (hyper pretentious) depending on severity.
Example (taken from the discussion that actually led to the coinage of the word): Less than 1% of the natively English-speaking world insists on speaking "the Queen's English" and the people who do are seen by the other 99% as pretentious because they believe to somehow be better than someone who speaks Scottish, Australian, Canadian, American etc. When a non-native speaker believes he or she is better than 99% of the native speakers because he or she has decided to learn and speak "the Queen's English", that person is being pretusional - so pretentious it's bordering on or has already fully crossed over to being delusional.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Whargarbl
Noun
A speech, oration, essay, or other communication that consists of a huge pile of nonsense intended to confuse people into agreeing with the producer. Essentially, an argument that fails to achieve a sufficiently high standard to be considered a fallacy.

Credit for this goes to Berke Breathed: Offensensitivity. the overwhelming desire to be offended.

Credit for this goes to Berke Breathed: Offensensitivity. the overwhelming desire to be offended. I love that word, but I've always thought it had a syllable more than it needed. Take away the "sen" in the middle and you get "offensitivity", which I think rolls off the tongue better. The meaning is still obvious. It's just easier to say.

Oh yeah, since we're already talking about words we've brought in from outside, can we get our definitions straight to separate "affluenza" from "special snowflake"?
I know that in my mind, both refer to a sense of entitlement, but "affluenza" distinguishes itself by specifically having to do with rich kids who think they have a right to do things others don't, simply because they're rich, whereas "special snowflake" is more of a "don't hurt my precious feelings" kind of thing.
Thoughts?

While I certainly do like the idea of you and I collectively having more brain power than all of the Interwebz put together, I'm afraid going too far down that rabbit hole may lead to rality stripping us of our hubris, ripping it in two and beating us to a bloody pulp with the wet sides of each half

Thoughts? "Sudden affluence syndrome" can affect anyone. Special Snowflake is also happening to just anyone, but has nothing to do at all with the wealth of that person. You can be both or just one, it is not inclusive.. I agree with that statement that it is not inclusive. I also kind of agree that it is two very different afflictions.

Mr Google has an algorithm that may be a decade behind on certain new terms. It didnt "get" the word goto for a long time.

Loving this word, so I'm adding it: Truthiness noun 1. the quality of seeming to be true according to one's intuition, opinion, or perception without regard to logic, factual evidence, or the like: the growing trend of truthiness as opposed to truth. Even though he says it's a semi-official word already, credit goes to thelightworks for bringing it to our attention

"Murdocked"
The act of having been sold a dud and being led to believe anything presented by the press, Including the fact that the MMR vaccine causes autism. Including the fact that there are WMD in all countries if you know where to look. Including the fact that there was NO WHITE CAR full of photogs following the car Diana was in that may or may not have caused the crash.[1] And of course, including that none of the murdock family knew anything about the hacking of private and not so private mobile phones, including royal family and governmental phones, to name just a few that they did NOT hack, honest.
[1]A White car identified on Paris CCTV, but NEVER traced back to the owner, never found, never to be spoken about ever again.

I actually intended to put that one in here a few days ago, but ended up reading a bunch of other posts and forgetting about it.
Maybe we need a clearer definition, though...?

Beelzebug NOUN: Satan in the form of a mosquito who enters your room at 3 am & despite all efforts can not be cast out. relative to that, squash bug: any insect or arachnid that makes the mistake of loitering on a hard surface for too long.

Time to make it official then with Nosefly. Any insect that wishes to hover about a foot in front of your face, or even closer. This is also used by the transport industry for any vehicle that overtakes then sits a couple of foot from your front bumper because they just dont want to be behind a truck.

I see I'm not the only one with insect problems when I'm trying to sleep at the moment. Beelzebug and nosefly, huh? I like it. Both because they're pretty much self-explanatory (apart from the car in front thing, but it works) and because they sound like super villains someone came up with in the 70s on an acid trip
