The latest update to Windows 10 included a change to how the Cortana search program works. I have a Dell Imperion 3417 laptop. If you click both buttons of the trackpad, it operates like clicking the middle button on a mount. I use that 3rd button functionality heavily when online. The problem is that now when i invoke a center button click, it opens the COrtana program. It's rather agrivating.
I can't figure out how to turn it off. I have been going though settings but can't find anything. Anyone know more about this?

From what I have read some laptops have a 3 or 4 finger configuration in settings and 3 finger is set for cortana. Some have had luck turning off the 3 finger configuration. Another thing is the search box in the menu bar. If you deleted it it can make cortana pop up at random it seems. Adding it back may stop it "Cortana had disappeared for months before she began popping up often enough to drive anyone crazy. Then I remembered that I had deleted that SEARCH box from the toolbar and thought that Cortana's offer to search for files, etc. may have something to do with my deletion of the box. So I right-clicked on an empty area of the toolbar and on the resulting drop down menu, I clicked on SEARCH. The arrow gave me three options and I chose "Show search box." The "Search Windows" box will show when you click next to the Windows logo by the toolbar. If you do not click again, Cortana will not show up. The box disappears after a while if you do not click to search for something. You will need to click on the "Search Windows" box for Cortana to show up. After trying all suggestions including the clean boot, reducing icon size, several malware/virus scans, etc. I have been free of Cortana. Yes can confirm that this works, Right click on bottom toolbar, you see a drop down menu, click on 'Cortana', then another drop down menu, click on 'show search box ' and away you go. thanks MYRTY." answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_cortana/cortana-keeps-popping-up-when-scrolling/fc2a7eba-b137-4b6a-8b70-1c4a82f1a482?page=5These were all before the Anniversary update, so not sure if they will work. I don't have the issue on my Acer with Win10, but it has the cortana icon in the toolbar. My Dell is stuck @ 8.1 so I can't help there unless I can find a way to still get Win10 free. I just received it the other day from a friend and wish I had them update it this summer before sending it to me. Win 8 drives me nuts. Glad I updated the Acer.

From what I have read some laptops have a 3 or 4 finger configuration in settings and 3 finger is set for cortana. Some have had luck turning off the 3 finger configuration. Agreed, That is where you should be looking.... My keyboard is configurable. Its not a lap top, so I have limited knowledge on what the laptop keyboard configurations should be... However. I do understand that there should be a way to configure how the laptop keyboard works, and what is assigned to what, and how to change it. I gather it may be under settings somewhere, so start under [reading a page] start control panel mouse and keyboard then, mouse, then touchpad settings, and you can then configure how to set certain responses, including sensitivity etc. I am hoping that there will be a section in there that states what each action should do, and from there, you can deselect cortana and select or insert a different response?... Looking again, I just found this page, I know its Vista, but, some things never change, and win10 control panel is almost identical, so this may be of help to where to start looking.... www.askdavetaylor.com/how_to_change_vista_dell_trackpad_touchpad_settings_preferences/If you are unhappy with Cortana, again, get into settings for web, and have it changed, de-selected, Then some friends at PC-Worlds tech guru's have come up with a handy way of terminating with extreme prejudice.... www.pcworld.com/article/2949759/windows/killing-cortana-how-to-disable-windows-10s-info-hungry-digital-assistant.htmlAnd if anyone else, like me, just got a bit "paranoid" about exactly WHAT is being sent back to microsoft there, read the article?.... As listed here is... superuser.com/questions/942418/how-do-you-forcefully-remove-apps-in-windows-10/942419#942419This is "High end stuff", as in, its command line, so not for the faint hearted, as its "Under the hood" tinkering with the code of windows. Proceed with caution, "Here be dragons"

THe problem I am having is several site say to change the setting for how the computer responds to that 2 button click. I can't find where that option is to change it.
If I go into the control panel and the "Mouse & Trackpad" here is nothing there for that. There is a spot you can click to bring up the "mouse properties" window. Still no joy. That has a link to the "Dell Touchpad Settings". That brings up a program from Dell. That allows you to configure a number of options like 2 touch scrolling. There is an option to change how it reacts to both buttons being pressed. If I change that, I loose the 3rd button functionality in Firefox. However, it still doesn't contain anything that call out Cortana.
So where do I go to find the option that links the 3rd button functions?
On a related note. I am trying to post a screen shot (.jpg format, ~230 KB size) and the forum software won't let me because it says it exceeds the file size.

According to recent articles the only way to turn it off since the Win10 Anniversary update is to turn it off in the registry or via group policy if you are using pro or enterprise edition of Win. The Anniversary update made it an integral part of the system and can't just be turned off with a button as before. www.howtogeek.com/265027/how-to-disable-cortana-in-windows-10/Here's an article for other things the anniversary update brought to win10 and confirms the above site about Cortana. www.makeuseof.com/tag/16-windows-10-anniversary-update-issues-fix/This from MS itself may help. Tell how to turn off certain features of Cortana down near the end of the article. privacy.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-10-cortana-and-privacy

This is just one of the reasons I refuse to update my W7 machines to 10. MS does updates whenever and for whatever reason they want. They have crashed my sons computer twice now doing updates and installing the wrong video drivers.

I think I may have reason to prefer Linux even more now... I have searched. OK, so it must be somewhere... Termination of cortana with extreme prejudice looks the only logical conclusion.... Third button in Firefox, I am wondering if that can be controlled in about:config in the firefox codes... Again, I dont have that ability to check as I dont have the touchpad. My mouse here has 8 buttons but their assignment is outside the firefox environment. I am beginning to think termination with extreme prejudice is the best option. Howeveropen about:config, and type [middle] in the search bar. You get a number of results, one of them being browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick; with a boolean value of true. There are four options more under that in my config. Check that the below are set.. middlemouse.contentLoadURL set to false middlemouse.openNewWindow; true middlemouse.paste; false middlemouse.scrollbarPosition; false And change/add/remove as needed. If one of them is set to "Open cortana" feel free to terminate its backside with extreme prejudice... highlight it and choose "delete" Another section for Firefox is an add-on that allows you to fully customise all inputs for the "mouse". addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mousecontrol/

I guess I never used a middle button, so I have no experience with the issue, but I also never see cortana on my machine, it's never crashed, and I forget the file size threshold here, but I haven't had trouble except when I try to upload something too big.
right now if I hit both buttons, it puts a scroll control on the screen and I have to click both again to stop scrolling. no sign of cortana. so if that's the result you want, it IS possible.

My "scroll control" target is under my scroll wheel. Dunno why its there, because either side of my wheel is a "fast scroll" button for the same thing...

What I have read says that this is a issue limited to laptop trackpads. If you plug in a normal mouse, it doesn't happen on the mouse.

I use a mouse... I have an inherent hate of track-pads. I aint all that comfortable with the Samsung Galaxy pad we have either... I like a mouse, and if I use a mobile device, I use a mouse in the USB port. Of course I will use my Track-ball mouse whenever I can, its fully mobile in its self, but that stays on this machine mostly, because I am of the generation that separates Internet from other life still, and keep it out of the way during daily life?.. [1]
So track pads, they just dont work for me, too complicated and imprecise. "The general direction of" is just not good for me. "Sometime soon" for a button press response is too woolly and vague. I like to hear and feel clicks, a sort of positive feedback. And I like the feel of the clicks under the scroll wheel as well...
[1] I know, I am "ancient", but I see no need to tweet my every step and expect a round of applause.

I hate mice for the exact reason you hate track pads. plus the acreage they require. I could probably get along with a trackball except I went to the tablet, instead.

I hate Mice or the exact reason you hate mice, plus the acreage they require., and having to chase the bloody thing over the desk is a swine, which is why I have the trackball.... Try one, you will never go back to mice ever again. Unless of course its where the uneducated have yet to swap on their machine.

Works fine for point and click but did you ever try drawing something with it? I do printed circuit board layouts on my computer. I just can't get the accuracy with a trackball that I can get with a mouse.

(MS Paint, and whatever photo editing program I have been shifting around for the last three computers.) whatever happened to the process of drawing a line by clicking on the start point and then clicking on the end point?

I actually had CAD software years ago. can't really justify paying for it for one drawing every 10 years. and even the pixel programs I have used in the past had a basic line drawing function.

I find a trackball more precise for drawing than a mouse. If its fine detail, enlarge the part you wish to put detail in with.
However, we are getting away from Cortana here.... any luck with it yet?...
