Physics has shown... and yes we have had experience of three wheel vehicles in UK, that two wheels at the FRONT make steering more stable when going into a corner.
W£hich is mostly where you need it when driving one of them...?...
You cant get "ABS" on a single wheel axle to work properly, because if its steering, it upsets the steering geometry and you loose grip.
However, BMW bikes have a clever ABS setup on some of their models, and it works----Kind-of---
Stability of tip into a corner, the wider the front wheels are apart, the more stability you have, as three wheel vehicles cannot "Tilt" like a bike does.
Well, one did, it was called a Honda "Spacey", and it was bloody terrible, three wheels, the two at the front were steering and also allowed the bike to tilt into corners, it was bloody weird, it wasnt good, and they stopped dong that as soon as they could.
The three wheel off road trike thing which was sort of around at the start of having Quad bikes, the Trike bike, was made illegal, because its bloody unstable, [ask Ozzy Ozborn,] and I believe its now even illegal to import one into UK.
Why?.. watch the Top Gear where Jeremy drives a Robin Reliant, and manages to tip it over multiple times.
Imagine that on a off-road vehicle.... KSI injuries were so bad that they took to banning the import of them.
IF, and its a big if, if you were to design a three wheeler vehicle for todays roads, I suggest two good wheels at the front doing all the work, and a single at the back "just to keep that ar$e from dragging on the road" kind of thing?.. think of a Mini[ORIGINAL style] front end and work from that.
The mini has worked out all the front end geometry you will ever need, they are competition proven, and they even do upgrades to carbon fibre sub-frames if you want a bigger engine.
Otherwise, just get four wheels.
The "tax breaks" and licence downgrade for having a three-wheeler are not that good. Comfort and stability are much more important?..
So how do the three wheel chopper bikes manage?..
Most of them are traditionally VW Beetle type back ends, Rear wheel drive, mostly rear wheel brake, and bike front end.
You dont drive it like you stole it.
Its more for comfortable cruising at a slower pace and you think about corners a lot more....
All the weight [engine] is hung over the back axle to make the rear wheels the main area of braking, all the front wheels do is steer.
If your going to fast to stop and steer at the same time, your going too fast anyway?.
They are definitely NOT competition machines unless its the "looks" of the thing.
There has been recently a three wheel vehicle where its an enclosed body that tilts... its sort of like riding a missile, you sit in tandem, and the whole thing tilts on corners, its like a low level roller-coaster ride, not good.
Otherwise, there are many different three wheelers out there, from Vans to Cars, take a look, see which you think looks more stable?...
