Microwave safety.
Before you all rush off and put "***CAUTION*** tape around the thing, lets all remember, its no more unsafe than the ijurt using it...
And as long as that ijurt aint zapping an ostrich egg.....
I have questions on certain Myths around Microwaves.
I will include the myth I have fond, and my initial response, because some of them are so stupid it bears saying so right from the first run through.
For a start, lets bust the idea that they all "leak" radiation....
Its a metal box designed to contain the radiation it creates, so unless you break the glass in the front, no it doesnt leak through the casing?...
I have been told to stay at least 5cm away from the glass for extra safety, but that glass has a gauze in it anyway, so it should be safe.
But then again, dont we all stay AT LEST 5cm away from ANY cooking surface, hob oven or grill, whilst its working?... I dont see why this is "Extra dangerous" for a Microwave to keep your bloody distance whilst its working?..
I also know that unless there is excessive dirt that stop the door seals working, they also stop leaks.
So unless a microwave is abused, its pretty safe....
Onwards to number two, Pace makers.
I am assured by an elderly lady with a tick-tock implant that she may not approach a microwave whilst its working, and this is an assured dyed-in-the-wood assurance that she assures me comes from an assured genuine source....
Its just, well, I aint heard of this one?. So any info is good on this.
Microwaves "kill" vitamins and nutrients in the food.
Yeah right...
Despite all the evidence pointing in the other direction, towards the "Boil it to death" brigade who dilute all the nutrients out of veg in a pot of water for over twice its recommended cooking time in boiling water on a stove, you SURE that Microwaves do more damage to nutrients than a boil-in-the-bag rice dish does?...
I have to ask, as you can neither destroy or create matter without a LOT of energy, where does all those nutrients go?..
The Microwave spends the least time heating anything and is the most efficient method of cooking known to man at this time, so again, compared to other cooking methods, ignoring the vegetarian eat-it-raw brigade, just how much damage does Microwave do to food in comparison to those other methods?..
Microwaves are more dangerous to Pregnant Women and small kids.
Yeah if you sit on one all day long?...
On consideration of a fresh new well serviced tested and known to be safe un messed with home microwave.
Back to the leaking microwave, I suggest, put your hand in front of the microwave, if it doesnt start getting warm, in the way that other meats do when they are affected by microwaves, then the thing is "safe", and if it isnt, shouldnt a detector machine used to detect stray radiation start beeping wildly?..
Look, if its dangerous for kids to be in the same room, shouldnt we know this by now?.. From the "Experts" that is, and not some conspiracy nut job called invetigator-Tim@tinfoil-helmet-dot-com?..
And if its dangerous for kids, why not us Adults, old people, infirm, and all that jazz?...
Microwaves are still in the food when you open the door so let it stand so the can dissipate.
I loved this one from a semi-intelligent "Blonde" who thought she knows but dont know how to unlock a bottle of headache pills...
Erm, .......you dont know how these things work do you?...
They excite the particles that absorb the energy and create heat, that heat "cooks" the food, so when you stop the power, its still getting hot, and that hot has not finished dissipating about the place, so, yeah, let it stand, its not as if you wolf down toast straight from under the grill, or sausages straight from the frying pan....[Whats a particle and why is it in my pizza?... no seriously, she did ask that...]
Microwaves are extremely short lifespan radiation, it has done its radiating before you even open the door, so dont be at it that it glows hotter than Sellafield or Three Mile Island on me, its not that type of radiation, ok?...
You cant cook "Certain" foods in a microwave.
May I refer you to the somewhat humorous quote from my Bread-maker that it does not create "French sticks" due to its shape....
You cannot cook certain foods in a way that you need to roast to crisp up the outer skin.
That does not stop you cooking any moist dish, but no, you cant use it to cook "Dry" foods, and trying to toast Nuts in it will result in a lot of pings and pops.
Unless its a "Combi-" thing like the one we got that does have an ability to be used as a small fan oven....
But it aint no biscuit oven.
And you can NOT make anything like passable bread in any Microwave oven.
It kills yeast.
Right, anyone got any more we can add to the list?... or anyone got any comments on refining results on this?.
