I went to see Ghost in the Shell with Scarlet Johansen tonight, it was a movie that I and the friends I saw it with all enjoyed, we were all fans of the original anime and it's sequels such as The Laughing Man and Stand Alone Complex stories. The visuals were great bringing alive the cyberpunk city scapes in great detail. There has been some controversy about the casting of Scarlet as the Major, but I think that the story justifies it and she does a good job anyway, and unit 9 is a diverse group anyway.
The story about what it is to be machine or human although not as complex as it is in longer forms of the story is well told and makes sense. For those that do not know its not really a spoiler as it is in the first 5 minutes of the story the Major is a cyborg, a robot body the 'shell' with the a human mind the 'ghost' of the title implanted in it.

I've been waiting for a review on that.

The character s just a brain in a robot suit that looks however the designers of that suit made it to look, the reasons how and why are part of the story I will not spoil it .
It's worth mentioning because there has been some talk to say a Japanese actress should have played the role, but there is no reason the body could not be built to look like a westerner.

I was thinking more about whether a non anime fan would be able to connect with it.

But I do not think it was any different than watching Bladerunner, The Fifth Element or Robocop, the story is coherent and there is nothing that is difficult to understand.

To be honest, someone who isn't a fan of the anime would likely have a better chance of it, as they wouldn't be sitting back and trying to make sense of everything the writers mashed together.

I took mrs TLW to the latest hitchhiker's guide movie, (how many years ago?) and she was significantly lost.
