if you are falling off a cliff, you can be saved by your shirt snagging on an overhanging tree

There is a related myth sometimes seen in films, where the hero picks up a bad guy and hangs them off a coat hook by their shirt or jacket.
I do seem to recall seeing footage somewhere of someone trying to jump off a bridge or out of a window, and being stopped by someone grabbing their shirt leaving the person hanging there. So it seems plausible to me.
I do love the idea of one of the cast being suspended from a coat hook...and everyone walking away and turning the lights out.
Testing, *muses* they could test different materials to see which one is A; Most likely to catch and B; Can support the most weight without tearing.

They might also want to factor in speed and whether the object the material gets caught on is broad/narrow or pointed/rounded/blunt.
I think speed is a major factor. If someone is running past you, you could easily stop them by grabbing a piece of their clothing (provided your body weight and position creates enough leverage) without tearing it. On the other hand, if you were theoretically able to hold on and stand your ground when grabbing onto the clothing of someone going past at, let's say 60mph, the clothing item might give/tear much quicker.
It's like putting a towel on a towel hook in your bathroom. If the towel hook is secured well enough and you place the towel on it lightly, the towel just hangs there. You can even apply some force and feel the towel give, but not tear. Pull down hard and quick enough though and either the towel or the hook will give in some way.
There's also the question of the shape of what you get snagged on. A narrow, pointed hook shaped object is far more likely to cause a tear than a broad, blunt object. Especially at speed.

Its not the speed but the overall amount of energy in the 'system' - meaning that body weight is also a major factor.

That was basically what I was trying to convey, so thanks for helping me out there

This could be a lot of fun. Lots of good TV.
Drop a whole family of Busters.
Maybe get some professional stunt folks involved.
And I love the idea of the coathook. ;D

The main myth could be about shirts, but they could also branch out and test other things, like pants, belts, backpacks, or anything that has a shoulder strap.

I pickup my kids by their shirts/rompers/overalls/etc quite often. It's a lot harder for them to run/wiggle away when their feet are not touching anything.
The type of materiel is also a factor. Denium will hold up a lot better than these paper thin designer t-shirt that you can pay $70+ at American Eagle or Areopostal.

Of course kids are not usually as heavy as adults.

We did that to a Kid in Junior school....He was an annoying brat who though it best to pick fights with anything that moved... you know the type?... We turned the hood of his coat inside out and hung him from a coat peg.
Took him almost 10 mins to work out that unzipping his coat may be the best answer?...
Laugh?... Its one of the funniest things I remember from being that young.
He was warned that if he carried on being annoying we would tie his shoe-laces together and hang him upside down?.... Cant remember if we actually had to carry that threat out...
Life was much simpler then. If someone annoyed you THAT much, you "Dealt with it", no one had even HEARD of "Counselling", and it was against the playground rules to go to the teacher until you had tried to sort it out yourself?... We had the school Bullies... you saw them at the end of every term walking home covered with a mixture of eggs and flour... no one ever knew where the eggs and flour came from, there was never any pre-arranged time and place, its just "Last day of school, Someone's getting it..."
I also witnessed a REAL life Snowman. One annoying kid just wouldnt give up with the snowball thing, so his victims got together, grabbed him, and stuffed snow into every space they could find.....
Took him half an hour to thaw out in the school nurses room.
Ooops... am I wandering off topic again?.. sorry CM, I just had a moment of Memory gain... I suddenly remembered how good it was to be a Kid....?....
Back ON topic, I therefore KNOW that if you tried this kind of thing with a good old Duffel Coat or Anorak, you CAN hang someone up by the hood..... Just make sure the hood isnt one of these modern detachable ones?...
I also suggest you get a good SOLID coat... I wear out coats quicker these days than I ever did as a Kid, they just dont make them to last these days?...
