Hanging by a thread - meaning to be in a precarious situation.
I've heard this saying hundreds of time, but wonder quite how literally it can be taken.
Can you really hang from a thread? As in is their any sort of fabric that is strong enough to take the weight of a human for any length of time?

As in is their any sort of fabric that is strong enough to take the weight of a human for any length of time? Spectra fiber might do it. Pound-for-pound it is 15 times stronger than steel.

I believe that the saying originates from the legend of the Sword of Damocles and means that one's fate hangs by a thread.

I guess they could test to see how large a sword a thread could hold as the 'small-scale' test. Would be a very simple rig to set up in the shop, and I think they have swords lying around.

Quite a few swords, IIRC, ranging from a katana up to a Claymore.
