Magnus effect, or spinning ball.
Just dropping this one here for the mo, for further investigation, "Bend it like Beckham", the science behind spinning balls and banana shots.

Forward the video to around 1:47, and you get the Fletner Rotor effect, and this... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotor_shipSomeone even tried an adaptation for a flying vessel, but, unfortunately, too much drag to make it work. This so far is an investigation into its usage, if anyone can make use of it, go ahead. I am just curious...

I remember when they did the fletner rotor experiments back before the turn of the century. I also remember doing a paper airplane design that was essentially a cylinder airfoil.
what I found interesting and would like to see a followup on is that it appeared to accelerate on hitting he water.
to me, the weakness of the effect is that it really only works on certain vectors. making a thrown or kicked ball curve is an efficient use of it, but, for example, a rotor ship would only be able to use a crosswind, while a headwind or a following wind would simply put lateral force on the boat.

The water thing, the ball was spinning, the water immediately stops that and indeed reverses the spin, you then get "Ground effect" along with spinning, and that makes the ball "fly" a short distance across the water?. Again like spinning a stone across a pond...?.. [-spinning bullet thread]

One of the reasons I placed it in here. MB's could maybe test some things from either a tall tower or other structure or maybe even up a cliff face of quarry, and get some better angles, all they need is a truck full of balls and camera's.

Might be suitable for Mythbusters Jr? wouldn't take too much in the way of safety gear.

Might be suitable for Mythbusters Jr? wouldn't take too much in the way of safety gear. Bunch of school kids at the top of a Damn, tied to the railings, yeah, I am kinda liking that idea?.. give 'em one football each?..
