Fish School and education.
There is a reason why a collection of Fish is known as a school... they learn from each other.
In a separate thread, I have already noted, on the subject of fish in my pond,
citadelofmyths.freeforums.net/thread/2306/ducks-pass-wind-fish
I am therefore theorising that even as low in numbers as fish in a pond or tank, that certain behaviour, certain feeding habits, depend on "Alpha" characters in the pond and how much they are adventurous.
Suggestion...
Take two tanks of fish and a strange food substance that they would not naturally be attracted to.
Feed them normal food, but supplement it with the new food.
Note how quick tank one would investigate and start eating that food.
Swap one possibly identifiable adventurous character fish from tank one to tank two, start feeding that tank the new food, and see if the reaction to it is quicker, and if that identifiable fish is "Teaching" his tank mates?.
I suggest doing that with something like Watermelon. that or Corn Flakes breakfast cereal.
I dont know for sure, but its not a natural occurring food to Koi Carp. But they LOVE it when they get the taste...

I have one or two adventurous characters that would be there at the opening of a packet of crisps [chips] if they could walk, and they are the first to investigate new food, the rest of the pond will watch them, so maybe it is that some foods that the two main characters in my pond just didnt like may be being rejected by the rest because of that "Alpha" behaviour?.
