I just recently got around to watching Star Trek Beyond. I've had it in my Vudu library since Christmas, but just have not been in a hurry to watch it. Partially I have been busy with life, so I have not been watching many movies in general, but I have also been hesitant to watch this one because I really disliked the last two Star Trek movies.
Start Trek 2009 I found to be too much action covering up a really dumb story. I also had trouble accepting a federation that is little more than a college frat house. Captain of a fully armed heavy cruiser at 28 years old as a general rule? Any military trying that would get the buts wiped off the face of the universe. The decisions are actually that I would expect for a whole crew that is fresh out of college and barely 20 years old. On top of that the literal non-stop action gets VERY tiring.
Star Trek Into Darkness was just as action packed and nonsensical, but on top of that, they insisted on trying to remake what is arguable best 10 Sci-fi movies of all time. That just rubbed me the wrong way.
Beyond
First off, they slow the pace of this one down, a lot. That was quite welcomed. They actually took some time to establish characters. It's a lot easier get emotionally involved with everyone when you are not rushing from action piece to action piece.
The action scenes were the normal fast paced, confusing, effects laden scenes that we have had in the last two movies, so nothing new there.
In this case, the villain makes even less sense than in the previous two movies, and that is saying a lot. There really is nothing to explain how the villain's downfall occurred. It seams very shoehorned in.
Overall, I would say this is an average movie in general. I'd give it a "meh" ranking. That is better than the last two ST movies, but well below other entries in the series.
My ranking of the series, best to worst.
Wrath of Kahn
Undiscovered Country
First Contact
Voyage Home
Search for Spock
Beyond
Insurrection
Nemesis
Generations
Final Frontier
Into Darkness
(2009)
