Just to cap off an already disastrous month for Disney Sony has ended its relationship with Marvel, the one that saw Spider-Man join the MCU.
Maybe.
This story broke a few days ago, followed within hours by Sony confirming the news in a press release in which they laid blame on Disney but praised Kevin Feige.
All of this apparently comes down to money, with Disney wanting a 50/50 split and Sony offering a 30/70 split; Although Sony holds the film rights Marvel retains the comic and merchandise rights.
Disney has responded to this by, allegedly, letting anti-Sony bots run rampant across Twitter. (You know, the exact same trick they claimed had been used against The Last Jedi, Solo and Captain Marvel). And trying to blame Sony. Most people however, including Disney 'shills', are blaming Disney.
This caps off a month in which Disney has been accused of cooking their books by up to $6 BILLION per year just at their parks, something that the SEC appears to be investigating. Galaxy's Edge has been empty, as indeed have their parks been in general. The Game of Thrones Writers have gone from 'writing a new trilogy' to 'doing a script treatment for a single film'. And then they discovered that a poll showed only 6% of people saw Captain Marvel as the strongest Avenger.
As I noted the leaving part is 'maybe'. The very short time between the news being reported and Sony issuing a statement would seem to imply that they already had a statement ready. While Disney not having one of their own does seem to indicate that they were blindsided. As such this smacks of Sony deciding to play hardball. It is Sony who holds all the cards here, and ultimately probably has nothing to lose - or far less than Disney who have a rather dull lineup of films in the works and has put their faith in an unpopular Character played by an unpopular actress.
