On the Old Mythbusters board someone mentioned a book that I always though would be interesting to read, but I can't remember the name. So can anyone help me out?
The plot was described as follows:
Interplanetary travel is actually very easy, something that most planets figures out around the invention of gunpowder. Because of the interplanetary travel innovation stagnates. For some reason Earth never did. In modern times, they get visited by off worlders and are able to figure out the secret of space travel. This means that Earth is now thrust into the center of galactic politics and is not by far the most advanced race in the galaxy.
Does anyone know what book that was?

I found what I was looking for. It is a short story called "The Road Not Taken" by Harry Turtledove.
